At airport after airport last week, I saw various members of our armed forces sitting at the gate before boarding, waiting for luggage at baggage claim, or cooling their heels outside the terminal.
I felt guilty whenever I did. In the big scheme of things, I was traveling for a pretty frivolous reason, while they were either just going on leave or about to head back to duty.
So on Veterans Day, I'd just like to pause and thank those men and women who have served, who have fought, and who have paid the ultimate price so that we at home may continue to go about doing things both frivolous and important.
And, of course, thanks to all those folks currently serving, too. For those of you I saw in various airports, I hope you got home safely and/or you're faring well on duty.
And now, since this is Slice, I'll throw out a pizza tie-in. If you want to buy pizza for U.S. troops stationed in the Gulf, there's always that old standby, GIPizza.org. For $2.95, you can treat a soldier to a slice of pizza and a cup of Pepsi.* (There's a five-slice minimum order.)
*Coca-Cola would be better, but you can't have everything.
