Domino's New Pizza Recipe: What Does It Taste Like?

The big news in pizzaland yesterday was that Domino's announced that it had a new core pizza recipe. The crust now has a garlic-herb seasoning; the sauce is supposed to be sweeter and bolder; and the cheese, well, the company is promising "shredded cheese made with 100% real mozzarella and flavored with just a hint of provolone," which makes you wonder what they were using before.

Anyway, as soon as we posted the news on Slice, we jumped to dominos.com to order.

How does the new Domino's pizza taste? you ask? Is it better? Is it good? Find out, my friends, after the jump.

Answer: The New Domino's Pizza Recipe Is Better. »

The Bottom Line

  • The sauce is better
  • The garlic seasoning makes the end crust taste a little like breadsticks
  • It's an improvement, but obviously nothing you'd order if you've already found a better local option

Thanks for doing this for me so I don't have to. Much appreciated.

I can't tell from your upskirt, but did they drop the cornmeal?

@s4xton - my thoughts exactly! Thanks slice!

Wow, what a coincidence.
There is a thread on the "Talk" portion of SE that addresses the question "Do you eat Bad Food"?
Does the new Dominos pizza qualify?
Most certainly.....

still no reason to eat it.

Thank you! I heard about the changes, and being a not-so-much pizza person in general, and a non-domino's fan, I was still considering trying it. Now you've done it for me, and I believe I'll stick with my local BlackJack Pizza... fresh mushrooms and decent wings, too.

We had Domino's at lunch today (it's the only pizza my boss will eat), and while I hated the old Domino's recipe, this newfangled garlic bread crust is AMAZING, and the sauce is significantly better. It's still not my favorite, but I will no longer kibosh it right out of the gate when suggested. Heck, if they sold the crust separately, I'd probably order that myself - it was delicious.

Cool, I wonder how long it'll take for Domino's here in Brazil to get the new recipe going. I must admit that Domino's is a guilty pleasure of mine, especially because it's one of the only options of "american pizza" here.

"shredded cheese made with 100% real mozzarella and flavored with just a hint of provolone,"

The catchwords are "made with," meaning there is some real mozzarella in there somewhere. It could be made with 10% "100% real mozzarella" and they wouldn't be lying..

You took one for the team! Thanks, Adam nice write up.

Sweeter sauce? Was that even necessary?

@BPC: They say it's sweeter, but as I wrote in the post above, it somehow seems less sweet than before.

And I know I just commented but I missed this gem, "shredded cheese made with 100% real mozzarella and flavored with just a hint of provolone." So there's what, more than 100% cheese on that bad boy?

Someone should do a Google map mash-up of towns and cities in the US with more than 10,000 residents showing locations of Domino's and non-chain pizzerias. This could then serve as a business plan for aspiring pizzaioli who want to open a pizzeria in underserved locales.

@BrianPrestonCampbell, I'm sure they're just stating that the mozzarella is 100% mozzarella. I have no doubt that it's low moisture mozzarella, but they're saying it has no additional fillers. So they're mixing 100% mozzarella with some provolone.

I'm probably in the minority, but I'm glad the crust texture didn't change. And a hint of heat to the sauce sounds good. Domino's will probably remain one of my guilty pleasure foods for when I don't have the money for real pizza or don't have the energy to make my own or do more than call for delivery.

Visually, the sauce-only pizza is completely and utterly unappealing. But it's good to know I'm not missing out on anything by ordering from my excellent local.

Thanks for the info Adam. Definitely will be worth trying at the $5.99 for a medium 2 topping promo that will be running. I agree though...local options aplenty will be hard to beat.

Well, I personally will only eat Dominoes take-out. I hate Papa John's as it has always made me sick. I hope you are right about the improvements otherwise pizza parties are gonna suck for my kids.

Thanks for taking one for team, Adam, so we don't have to. Graci.

at my old college there was this domino's delivery guy who used drive around campus in the middle of the night selling leftover pizzas for cheap from his car. that's pretty much the only way i can be persuaded to consume domino's: i'm extremely drunk, it's 2 AM, and a pizza arrives unasked for, unexpected, for very little money.

Its fine if NO other option. If anyone orders it in place of a local joint they have problems.

Let me be the FIRST to say thanks for trying so we don't have to to.

Oh wait...

You mean being snooty about Domino's isn't original?

Seriously, thesteveroller, I can't believe that many people posted that comment.

@BPC: I'm with ratbuddy in that their sneaky wording means that the cheese is not all mozz. It just means they used 100% mozz along with other stuff which is where they can fit in the hint of provolone.

Wow, I wondered why it tasted odd yesterday... I was actually pretty grossed out.

Although I prefer like to make, Wholefood's "365" ($4.99) frozen pizza with uncured pepperoni, I must say, I do really like Domino's thin crust with pepperoni for delivery.

Maybe I'm a newbie, but I like Domino's. I'm eager to try the new recipe, now that I know that it doesn't suck. Actually, let me rephrase: I like their American Legends pizzas. Their thin crust is really good, and I think the new combinations they put out were all pretty tasty. For a while, me and my husband were ordering one at least once a week. Give em a chance!
And- for the record- I can't stand Papa John's, with his sickeningly sweet sauce!!!

Just like frozen pizza, Domino's has a time and a place. I have the privilege of living in NYC and having so many pizza options, but a majority of country may only have 1-2 delivery options.... or even areas with more options, maybe your local Domino's is the only one that delivers after 10 pm. Or maybe you're just craving a bit of nostalgia from your college years and wanna order a cheap pie + wings combo.

I have made similar posts on AHT, that even though I love Shake Shake, Bill's, and whatever other "perfectly blended" burger is of the moment, I still crave and indulge in McDonald's once every 4-5 months.

Domino's is not great pizza, but there is little need to shit on the whole idea of it in a haughty, arrogant tone.

i LOVE Dominos. They have so many great options. Papa Johns = vomit.
When So You Think You Can Dance was on I started a new tradition called Dancing and Dominos and ordered a Dominos pizza/sandwich/pasta and their AMAZING lava cakes every Tuesday. Say what you will, but Dominos is fab.

It actually looks pretty decent, at least it's not "charred" (burnt to a crisp).

It actually looks pretty decent, at least it's not "charred" (burnt to a crisp).

We just ordered a couple of pies to get rid of the new year's hangover, and I gotta say, I think it's worse than the old recipe. Not that I have too much of a basis of comparison (I think the last time I ahd dominos was in college), but this new recipe seems to have an artificial butter flavor that is really off-putting. I think it's in the garlic-herb stuff that they brush the crust with. It made me gag a little bit (granted, I was hungover).

On the other hand, once the pizza got cold, that odd butter smell went away, or at least was no longer vaporizing, and was unnoticeable.

The sauce still has this occasional ketchup taste as if they really didnt change anything other than add more herbs. As far as im concerbed its the same as it always was.

THEY MADE IT WORSE, GARLIC OVERKILL ON THE CRUST.

I feel that all of you that say that Domino's is a "College Pizza" or a "Guilty Pleasure" are lying to yourselves! They were the first pizza company to offer delivery and still lead the world in this. They continue to dominate the market in this category. Not to mention, they were named #1 in customer service last year. The new ad campaign shows how they have listened to the people and have totally changed their pizzas to satisfy them. The new pizza costs more than the old one, but still hasn't caused prices to rise. Domino's has set every standard that other competitors try to follow. Whether it's their 30 minute guaranteed in the 80's or their heat wave bag for delivery that keeps the pizza hot, they have continually set the bar for other pizza places to follow. Sure you can order from a ma and pap place and get something original, but what brand can you really rely on when you are traveling around the world. That brand is Domino's. They were the trailblazers back in the day and continue to reinvent themselves to accomadate the mostd important person, the customer. I am in no way affiliated with Domino's, but thought that they should be shown a little credit. Times are tough, but they always offer deals like their '555' deal for 3 mediums with 1 topping for $5 a piece. Now they are reconstructing their whole pizza to satisfy the complaints of the past. Call me crazy, but they might be the largest company in the USA that still listens and cares about their customers. Domino's is a part of the American nostalgia and should always be. Please give the new pizza a try, if you don't like it, no big deal. But remember that if the overall consensus is that America doesn't like the pizza, they will listen and make changes for you! Gotta love American companies!!

Dominos: Cheap pizza that you get for the kids because they don't know any better and because the concept of pizza in itself is fun. Not likely to fly after about age 9, as they wise up pretty fast after trying just about anything else. Great for birthday parties and field trips.

Thanks for the Capitalism lesson, Jaymel22. There is always a market catering to the lowest common denominator. But big and established does not a good pizza make.

My respect for their business model doesn't help their nasty pizza go down any easier.

jaymel22, right on! (Yes, I do like Domino's Pizza...but not quite as much as I like my own...)

I wonder if Utah got the memo yet because it's still the same crappy tasting pizza. It's genious marketing hype with nothing to back it up. Why in the world can't they make an amazing tasting pizza with all the great chefs in the world? Because Americans settle for crap! Demand flavor and quality! I am back to making homemade pizza's, it's the only way to get a great tasting pizza these days. Farewell Domino's and good luck.

my dad had a stroke after eating the old dominoes pizza has anyone had a health issue after eating the old dominoes recipe and can someone direct me to a good lawyer i saw what the old pizza looked like what was i really eating because it doesnt look like pizza to me i dont know what it looks or tasted like anyways if you know a good lawyer let me know this is joejoe111

I had an allergic reaction to the new recipe immediately while I was eating the first slice. I have never been allergic to anything in my life, nor have I ever been allergic to Dominoes pizza before this. We called the branch that we got it from to talk to the manager but they were useless, nor have we received any e-mails or phone calls regarding our inquiry of a FULL ingredient list. All we have seen was there there was a "medley of herbs" but what herbs? My lips swelled up, I looked like if Angelina Jolie had lip injections, plus I broke out in hives. If I hadn't taken Benadryl immediately I would've had to go to the hospital. Luckily it was something Benadryl was able to take care of this situation.

I really wish I knew exactly what it was that that caused my allergic reaction. All I know is to avoid Dominoes pizza but it would be very helpful if I knew exactly what ingredient to look out for. I am just your quintessential poor college student so if anyone knows a lawyer who is interested in my case along with Joey's case I have pictures, as well as a handful of witnesses. I don't have any money =/ but I would be more than happy to co-operate with someone about it.
-Lpena21

Huh??,..so you had a reaction to something and you want a LAWYER!? For what? A large poultice of money is going to make it somehow better? Only in America, that's why we need law reform to have to pay for the others sides legal fees if you loose. You CAN find what was in the pizza, as a college student you don't know how to research this?
As far as a stroke, well any fatty meal can cause this if you are on the edge with vascular disease.

We ordered Dominoes Pizza after New Years just to break the chain of all the home cooking during the holidays. I was horribly let down. The old recipe is the best. We will not be ordering it again.

I haven't eaten Dominos in so many years, I don't even remember what the old recipe tasted like, I just know that I didn't like it. So, after hearing that they had made it edible, I decided to give it a shot. I actually like it quite a bit now. It's not my favorite pizza, but I won't just write it off anymore. I really enjoy the crust and like that fact that it reheats very well. With the other pizza chains, the pizza doesn't seem to taste the same once its been refrigerated and then reheated, but Dominos is still good. I give the new recipe two thumbs up. :)

We have never been Domino's fans, it tastes gross and gives my family (all of us) MASSIVE heartburn, but decided 3 days ago to give the new recipe a try since we were hungry and had seen the commercial for about the billionth time in about 45 min. . Yes, the new recipe does taste a bit different- the sauce was a little sweeter but still ketchup-y, and the crust was garlicy & didn't have much of an edge to constitute it to considered crust (it was like one continuous piece of pizza with maybe a 1/2 to 1 inch of "crust" at the end...does that count as even being called crust??) As to did we like it or not...NOT! It still is at the top of our list as grossest pizza, and the heartburn from the new recipe was worse then from the old!!! Our boxers who'll eat anything even snubbed their noses at it! As to ordering it again, we would only order it if it ends up being the ONLY pizza place in our area that is in business and not closed down. It's a nice try Dominos, but you can keep your slice of heartburn, my family doesn't like it nor want it ever again! YUCK!!!

We've gotten Domino's pizza twice since the new recipe came out.
The first time we ordered, the store was new.
YUK
The second time, we thought we would give it another chance after the store had time to get running smoothly.

I'll just make my own pizza at home.

I learned a lot today. I really appreciate the in depth review on this. This article helped out mankind today in unfathomable ways. Thus, I am appreciative (reread previous sentences to gain more appreciation). You had a pretty good idea with no cheese on the pizza. I am going to try it one step further today and get one with only crust and butter sauce on it, like a giant frisbie breadstick. I wonder if they would do that for me?

@ChewingFarts: I actually did try to get one with nothing on it and just the crust. In that case, the Domino's called me back after I placed my order online and told me they would just put the herb stuff on the side. I took it to mean they'd deliver the crust with a little canister of the gunk, but maybe they meant that all they'd do was spread the rim of the crust with the mixture. When you try it, let me know what happens!

Add me to the list of folks who liked it. I'll be honest though... I was a lot more blown away by the new online pizza tracker ordering system... Is that new? I feel like I had a glimpse into the future. I am a sucker for food technology...

Same old puke disk with some garlic powder sprinkled on before
a skid-row drunk hurls on the toppings.
Damndemhoes is the fowlest pizza on the planet.
How this operation stays in business is a mystery.

Had it the other day for a work-sponsored lunch, which was dissapointing because they usually go with a local joint.

My thoughts on the new Domino's:
- Crust was under-done
- The garlic-butter stuff on the crust was no artificial tasting
- Too much cornmeal

Overall, it was okay, but I have other chains I'd rather purchase from if it's my money. Free, I'll take it.

Regardless of whether or not Domino's has changed its pizza recipe, I am still mystified as to why people would order from them in an area saturated with local, and better, pizzerias. (This especially puzzled me when I had lived in Hoboken, NJ, an area renowned for good Italian food, including one of the best pizzerias around, yet a lot of the yuppie crowd was still craving their Domino's.)

They have got to be kidding. Still crap. I ordered extra mushrooms and extra cheese on a supposedy NY style crust. I'd hate to see what regular mushrooms and cheese look like. I haven't ordered from Domino's for probably 20 years (they used to be the only ones who delivered) and it was awful then. Saw the commercials and gave it a try. Some people will eat anything, I guess. The only thing NY about the crust was the fact that you could fold it. Sauce was still awful and not much of it (a blessing). I called for a refund.

Domino's pizza is not any better than it was, prior to their giant advertising claim. We drove 20 mins each way because we wanted to try this "new and improved pizza", but could have hit the lunch line at the local high school for the same quality pizza. The cheese tasted like it was off a frozen pizza from a grocery store, and the dough tasted like a thicker version of their original. I can't find a positive side to this pizza. We will certainly not return to Domino's.

Wow...lemmie go grab a new Coke to go with this new pizza.
I dunno if it's the store I got it from, the shift I got it on but the pizza really really sucked. There was so little sauce it might as well have been cheesey bread and it threw off the entire taste of the pizzza. Is part of their new pizza to actually put less sauce? IThe crust was nice, the cheese did taste different and is different, it's not all melty like it used to be.
The pizza does remind me a lot of Papa John's, which is pretty much the most disgusting tasting pizza of all the pizza chains. Domino's was my favorite, I'm srsly POed it changed.

Guess I should clarify that it reminds me of Papa John's by how much it sucks :/ at least Papa John's puts sauce and has slightly melty cheese (the Tuscan 6 cheese is the only one I can eat without feeling the need to puke).

It actually wasn't bad for cost and being Domino's. With major chains, you always expect some degree of disappointment; however, this was one of those better decisions in regards to both fast food and popular chains. I had one deep dish pepperoni/gr. olive and one thin crust bacon and onion. Both had the new tomato sauce and robust as expected. They both had different tastes and textures at opposite ends of spectrum and both were delightful considering what they were-major chain, fast food and delivery. Domino's has advertised they changed...and they have...kudos.

I LOOOOOOOOVE pizza! That's why I don't eat Dominos. :)

I too broke out in hives after eating this pizza. I've never been into Dominos but my husband really wanted to try the "new" taste. But this morning I had hives all over my face, and concentrated near my mouth, and I hadn't had anything else to eat.

I was on my phone ready to order my favorite Pizza Hut pizza, when my wife said lets try the new Dominos recipe. I sto eat next week.hould have known when I could have ordered 2 large Pizza huts for 10 each or $20 total. So I called domino's where I order something every week and ordered the extra large hand tossed. I am 57 yrs old and I have NEVER ever eaten a pizza that I couldn't stand before tonight. The sauce was so spicy it burned and the crust was just plain blah, and to think I could have had 2x as much GREAT Pizza hut for about the same money...I know where I'm not going

So, the hubbie and I *were* regular Domino's customers. We'd order at least once a week for Friday night pizza-beer-and a movie night, sometimes more often given our hectic schedules. Never again. Tried the new sauce and ended up feeling sick to my stomach from the cloying taste. It's HORRIBLE! So sad.

Wow, maybe we lucked out with a well-maintained branch, but we've ordered the deep dish twice now and it's been much improved from the old recipe both times. Before I hated Dominos for the signature "cardboard" crust but I actually like this pizza as much if not more than Pizza Hut - as far as chains go. Even my husband likes it and he is SO picky about pizza. Nothing was overcooked, undercooked, too spicy, too anything. It was a very mild and pleasant pizza with a good consistency to the crust. In fact, I think we will order it again tonight!

We just had the new pizza. OMG!! Disgusting, I actually think it is worse than is was before. We will never go back. I never get heart burn, and it was actually painful to get it down.

I had to try this "new" pizza...just out of curiosity.
I knew it would be bad, but it's worse than I even imagined.
I can honestly say it's one of the worst pizzas I've ever had. No doubt, I'm a bit picky...I've lived in Italy...but STILL...This pizza is disgusting by the lowest of standards. If you really like pizza, don't waste your time or your money. The crust is disgusting, as well as the sauce. I can't believe that ANYONE would say this is good pizza. It's on the level of the pizza you had when you were in high school and had cafeteria pizza. Maybe even worse. Shame on you, Dominos. An idiot could make better pizza than this. I'm not one to post about ANYTHING...but it's THAT bad.

My dad would always order Domino's pizza all the time back in Hong Kong. Strangely, all the Domino's pizza started disappearing and were replaced by Pizza Box. I still miss Domino's..

Just had my slice of the 'new' pizza and I hated it. If anything, it's worse than it was before.I can honestly say that my beat up apartment oven has produced superior pizzas. I guess the only thing they have really changed is their marketing guy.
Ok , so writing this review was really making me feel like a idiot for spending 16 dollars on that crap. So I took a deep breath and called and asked them to refund my money (a first!) They agreed and I feel much better now. I will not be going back ever. Bottom line, If you like their pizza, good for you. Otherwise, GET YOUR MONEY BACK !

Hi....Can anyone tell me, what types of cheese Dominos purchases for making pizzas....can you also suggest me at what price they purchase these types of cheese...Thanx in advance.

Without any bias, or as much as I can withhold. I have recently tasted Dominoes and Papa John's respectively, within a 2 day period, and found I enjoyed Papa John's pizza above Dominoes new recipe. The main reasons I chose PJ's vs Dom's, were apparent immediately, better ingredients. I ordered a mushroom onion pizza original crust from both brands, and found Dom's mushrooms are reminiscent of cup o' noodles shrimp soup(those tiny little shrimp), while PJ's uses tasty portobello mushrooms. Second a vegi pizza should not be as greasy as a meat pizza, regardless of butter spread on crust, the bottom of the box should not be see through. I have made request at PJ's to put their tasty Garlic parmasean butter on the crust, and it did not soak the pizza or the bottom of the box in grease. I did enjoy the variety of ingredients Dom's offers, delivery was quick (less than a mile away). Price was OK, but considering PJ's offers any large pizza (any way you like) and a order of wings(breads or strips) for 15 dollars plus tax and delivery, Dom's needs to pull more coupons out of their butt. PJ's crust is definitely better, I don't care for dominantley sweet sauces, they seem too similar to me now. The clincher, as everyone knows, is the complimentary Garlic butter sauce and pepperocini pepper, and that's all the fatboy wrote!

One last thing I forgot, after working in the restaurant industry all my life, I've learned to spiel when needed (i.e. a responsive customer). Customer service requires a spiel to insure quality, accuracy and customer appeal. Papa John's had great service, while Dominoes lacked that customer service care, not a big deal but can make a difference to some customers. Simply put PJ's was friendlier.

I only eat Domino's Pizza when it is free and distributed at some public function. I am so glad you did this review. Now I can continue to spend my money elsewhere.

talk about a waste of money the problem is it got worst man !!! i just ordered a peperoni pizza i ate half of a slice and threw the rest out i wouldnt even eat this pizza for free i wish i could get a refund

I love how everyone is taking out their unhappiness on this poor pizza. i had the new Dominos pizza today and i LOVED it. Ive never really liked Dominos pizza before, but now w/ this new recipe, i'm totally hooked. I still love Papa Johns too (and I'm admitting that, so clearly i'm not bias) so it'll be back and forth for me with the 2 different companies just to change things up. Here's what i love about the new dominos recipe: crust is more flavorfull and has a better texture, sauce is just better, cheese blend is perfecto. i dont know why people are complaining about greasiness.. i mean what did you expect? did u not know that fast food delivery pizza is kinda greasy and not very healthy? i mean seriously. i cant think of a time when i ordered a non-greasy pizza. baking cheese leads to grease. and im just being straight up, this new dominos pizza i just had wasnt actually all that greasy, suprisingly, but i wouldnt have been mad if it had been.
