NYC Wine & Food Fest Planning a Blow-Out Pizza Party Event for 2010?

An interesting tweet from Lee Schrager, the man behind the NYC Wine & Food Festival:

Tweetzeria@Lee_Schrager: "what are your fav pizza places in NY? we are lining them up now for Pizza Party at #NYCWFF this October..wouldnt Rocco be a great host?"

Very intriguing. If you're familiar with the Wine & Food Festival (sort of a South by Southwest of food), this should bring to mind such hot-ticket NYCWFF events as the annual Rachael Ray Burger Bash (which also takes place at the South Beach Wine & Food Festival) and last year's Meatball Madness party. While there are hundreds of sessions to choose from during the WFF weekend in October (seminars, tastings, lectures), these mega-events that bring together various heavy-hitter chefs and restaurants from the area (and beyond) are the ones that sort of anchor the weekend. (Burger Bash and Meatball Madness served as bookends last in 2009.)

Given that A) Slice–Serious Eats has hosted two very well-received pizza seminars* as part of the Wine & Food Festival (The Pieman's Craft 2008 and 2009) and that B) pizza is among NYC's iconic foods (if not the most iconic), and that C) there's been an pizza explosion in the last several years, we're not surprised that Schrager and company would consider going all out with a pizza-themed anchor event this year.

Which brings me to this question for you, Slice'rs: What pizzerias would you advise Schrager to bring into the mix? Answer here, and we'll try to zap over the collective wisdom to the Big Cheese himself. [via @Lock]

* I seem to recall reading somewhere that someone described our Pieman's Craft event as sort of a sleeper hit, but now I can't find that reference online anywhere. Still, the feedback we received on our two events was overwhelmingly positive. Trust me!

A&J's - Forest Hills. My all-time favorite upside-down slice.

Jorge,
I hate to say it but A&J's, the first place I ever ate pizza ate, the place that held a special spot in my heart for years and years, is under new management the last few years and has taken a hit for the worst. Definitely not what it used to be.

For NYC, I propose:
Adrienne's Pizza Bar
Lucali over Franny's & Grimaldi's
Joe's for the regular slice
Motorino (shocking, huh?)
Sac's in Astoria
DiFara
Totonno's in Coney Island
L&B
Bleecker Street Pizza (just for the Nonna Maria)

How do they pull an event like this off? Do the pizzerias all pre-cook pies and then just re-heat them at the event? They're obviously not bringing in coal ovens and wood-fired brick ovens...

@NYC Food Guy - Points for nostalgia?

I second Adriennes. Oh my god, Stone St. on a beautiful summer day with a beer and maybe something chocolatey from Financier after...did I mention I am a glutton for nostalgia?

I would like to see a significant number of REAL italians:

Luzzo
Keste
Sezz Medi
Trattoria 089
Di Fara
Carmine 28

@davemp
i like and agree with your suggestions
nice including sezz medi an 089

"REAL" italians....god bless you

Paulie Gee's!

This is exciting news. Looking forward to it.

What is the deal with Zero Otto Nove in the Bronx's Little Italy? Is it rarely mentioned because it is not that good or because it's off the beaten path?

I never "got" the hype over Joe's, but as a slice joint, places like Patsy's EH, Pizza Box, Sal & Carmine's and Tomato & Basil should be on a list for possible inclusion into such a venture as well.

BTW, it stinks having your home computer down. Hopefully it gets fixed today :( boo hoo

The tour needs to give some love to Staten Island. Joe & Pat's and Denino's for thin baby.

"this October..wouldnt Rocco be a great host?"

I seriously hope that's not the "Rocco" i'm thinking about ?
Mind you...if it is ,he would fit in quite well with some of the pizzzamakers out there who care more about their ego than the quality of their pizza.

@davemp What does "REAL" italians mean?

@tonycalzone:
by "REAL" italian I meant people born and raised in Italy.
Having an Italian last name is not the same than being born and raised there.

Pizza is an Italian dish, isn't it?
Like for other ethnicity, I believe food is part of a culture of a population.
To make a great dish ( either is pizza or matzahball) you have to be part of that culture.
And when it comes to pizza (this is my personal opinion) italian do it better.
That's all.
