Why This 'NYT' Article Is Good for Pizza

The New York Times's Oliver Strand gets his fingers in the flour in a story about make-it-at-home pizza today. Does this signify a new "pizza moment"? I certainly hope so. But let me qualify that a bit ...

For the last few years, there's been a pizzeria boom across the U.S., with folks opening new wood-burning "Neapartisanal" pizzerias left and right. Until recently, that's been pretty much what the press has focused on (and, yes, I will admit, Slice has been just as guilty in the past with the narrow lens).

But, parallel to that surge, there's been a make-it-myself movement quietly building momentum in kitchens and backyards everywhere. So while I say that the publication of this Times article may signify a "new pizza moment," in truth this MIM pizza moment has been happening all along. What's new is that it's finally getting the attention it deserves.

That's not to say that there haven't been websites like Pizza Therapy and PizzaMaking.com doing amazing work guiding DIY pizza enthusiasts to new highs and spreading the gospel. In fact, I would go so far as to say that these two sites are almost singlehandedly (or twohandedly?) responsible for incubating and nurturing the movement. But unless you already had an interest in making pizza, you might not have thought to seek out their considerable wisdom.

And then there are folks like NYC-based Mark Bello of Pizza a Casa, who teaches people how to make pizza at home.

So although the hardcore DIY pizzamakers among us would say that there's not all that much new in what Mr. Strand is preaching, he's got a much larger pulpit to shout from. And if that coaxes new folks or on-the-fencers into the mad, mad world of pizza obsessives, all the better. So, please, folks, send that Times link around to all the avid cooks and bakers you know, along with links to Pizza Therapy and PizzaMaking.com — and, while you're at it, Slice, since we're shaping up to have a fair amount of enthusiastic pizzamakers gathering here. The more, the merrier!

The "new" DIY boom will certainly lead to better pies at home and may even lead DIYers to better appreciate all the pizza out there in the world. That's a good thing.
