Dyker Heights is a virtually untouched Italian-American stronghold in southern Brooklyn with plenty of fantastic pizzerias including Krispy Pizza, full of old-school Sicilian touches from the cases of arancini to colorful mural of an ornate donkey-drawn cart that adorns the wall facing the oven.

Sensing that Sicilian was the way to go, I opted for the Palermo Slice, Krispy's take on the traditional onion-and-anchovy topped square pizza of Sicily. Krispy's version was a bit toned down, lacking the anchovies and adding a layer of fresh mozzarella under the tomato sauce.

The crust was focaccia-like and a perfectly crisp on the bottom, with a great chew and just the right amount of oil seeping in. The sweet tomatoes combined with even sweeter caramelized onions might have benefited from the addition of a few savory anchovies (but that might just be the anchovy lover in me talking.) A Sicilian slice like this combined with a flat screen playing Italian talk shows on satellite RAI makes for a wonderful Brooklyn pizza eating experience.
