Dear Slice: Where Can I Find a Good Grandma Slice in Long Island/NYC?

Reaching in to the Slice mailbag, we've got a Slice'r looking for some help finding the pizza of her youth ...

Dear Slice, Letters from Slice'rsWhen I was younger, my father used to take me to Roosevelt Field Mall in Long Island. Like back in the mid '80s. He would take me cause I'd go anywhere with him but I also because knew they had a pizza store. Not Sbarro. The pizza store was minimal at best, but it had a square slice that I adored, and no matter how many grandma slices I get, I cannot taste the same type. Since your knowledge of pizza places and facts are vast, would you know the type of pizza I am talking about and where I can get it now? It was a square slice—not as thick as Sicilian, so I'm thinking it's a grandma slice. But the sauce was slightly sweet, not acidic, and there was a sprinkling of mozzarella cheese.

Erica,

Sounds to us like you're describing, yes, a grandma slice. Typically not as thick or as airy as a Sicilian slice but still squareish or rectangular and pretty sauce heavy. As for the sauce, that varies from pizzeria to pizzeria and doesn't seem to have as much to do with the style of pizza. Perhaps some Slice'rs out there also know the pizzeria you're talking about and can speak to the style of pizza you're recalling here.

As it is, the grandma slice seems to be a Long Island thing that has slowly migrated into NYC in the last decade or so. They're fairly common these days. Just look around! And we're sure Slice'rs here can direct you to a good one!
