Slideshow: Snapshots from Sunday's Slice Meet-Up

The Crowd
The Crowd
With the exception of a few folks (John Wozniak and his wife) who showed up a bit later, this was the crowd who showed up for the Slice Birthday/Pizza Meet-Up yesterday. We've got, clockwise from red shirt at 11 o'clock: Scott "Pizza Tour" Wiener; Maggie Hoffman and her husband, Matt; Girl Slice; J. Kenji Lopez-Alt; exflexitarian; Moe; Donny Tsang; Hong-An Tran; Joshua Bousel and his wife, Kris; and Maggie's friend, John.

Yeah, I know, I should have had everyone look at the camera. After a few beers in, what decent camera skills I had sort of went out the back door.

South Brooklyn Pizza (First Avenue)
South Brooklyn Pizza (First Avenue)
Maggie and Matt brought the first pie of the afternoon, a very nice Margherita pizza from nearby South Brooklyn Pizza on First Avenue (see our Daily Slice on SB here). (And, yeah, I know, "South Brooklyn" in Manhattan. Funny, huh?)
The Crowd Again

OK. You twisted my arm. Here's the crowd from another angle, where you can see some faces for a change.
Peppers and Onions

Slice ordered four pies from Rosario's, a few blocks away on the Lower East Side. We figured that a typical NYC-style pizza wouldn't suffer too much on delivery. Rosario's was OK — the pizzas with toppings (we also ordered a pepperoni along with two plain pies) were the best. The plain Rosario's was pretty lackluster. (Sorry, all you Rosario's lovers!)
Sam's of Cobble Hill
Sam's of Cobble Hill
Donny and his housemate, Moe, brought a plain pie from Sam's on Court Street in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn. Total surprise. It's one of my favorite pizzas. It help up well, but you really have to eat it in situ, since Sam's is a freakin' trip back in time.
Deja Vu All Over
Deja Vu All Over
I would love to track down just exactly who first drew/designed the Italian pizza chef dude doing the A-OK sign. It turns up everywhere — often with a steaming-hot pizza, as on the Sam's box here. It's almost a parody of itself at this point, but I don't think either of these places are using it ironically.

And, wow. A fan of Scott's tour sent him these custom-designed shoes. Snazzy! (Oh, and happy birthday, Scott! — He's one year older today, 10/25).
