Daily Slice: Vinny Vincenz, East Village
Daily Slice gives a quick snapshot each weekday of a different slice or pie that the folks at Serious Eats have enjoyed lately.
The Margherita slice at Vinny Vincenz on First Avenue suffers a little from a too-sweet sauce. The fresh mozzarella is used somewhat sparingly, so the balance is a bit off, even though the crust is crisp and tasty, and a sprinkle of Pecorino adds the perfect amount of salt.
But the Margherita isn't what you're there for anyway.
The Sicilian square is the way to go, and the counterman generously offered us a corner slice.
Though it may look a little dark, the crust isn't bitter at all, just crisp and well seasoned on the outside, without getting tough. The interior is fluffy and warm, rich and comforting. This is a slice you want to eat on a cold day. There's plenty of cheese, and while that cheese is nothing special, the balance of this slice is right on. There may be flashier spots in the neighborhood, but Vinny Vincenz is still worth a visit.
