Top This: How to Make Heart-Shaped Pepperoni Slices
We showed you how to make a heart-shaped pizza on Monday. Today, we're going all in, with a heart-shaped pizza topped with heart-shaped pepperoni. Or, as I like to call them, heartaroni.
To make them, you'll need a 1.5-inch heart-shape cookie cutter. It's important that the cutter be 1.5 inches, since the diameter of most common store-bought pepperoni brands is just a hair larger.
The basic premise is to stack 4 to 8 pepperoni slices and press the cutter through them. But there are a few tricks, which I cover in the slideshow »
The perfect pizza condiment for this pie is Mike's Hot Honey—a little bit spicy, a little bit sweet. Just like your hot honey.
Where to get a 1.5-inch heart cookie cutter? Baking-supply manufacturer Wilton sells one as part of this set ($3.29). You can find a store that carries Wilton products here — most often a Michael's, JoAnn's, or Hobby Lobby. Or try a well-stocked kitchenwares store or baking-supply retailer. (In New York City, you can find a 1.5-inch heart cutter at New York Cake & Baking.)
I used Hormel pepperoni, one of the most common brands, so this should be duplicable in your own home pizza kitchen.
It's as easy as pie. You'll love it. Sure beats round pepperoni....
Supplemental Recipes and How-To
- Kenji's New York–Style Pizza Recipe works perfectly for this pie. Just note that the original recipe has you divide the dough in thirds. For the 10-inch heart pizza shown here, you should divide the dough into four balls
- This pizza sauce recipe ... well, I'm kind of in love with it. Try it!
- Here's how to make your pizza into a heart-shape. It's stupidly simple, but you will need a pizza peel and pizza stone to make one
Y'all better try this. I risked my marriage to bring you this how-to. Said Girl Slice when offered a piece of this heart, "You didn't make this for me. You made it for the Slice'rs. Hmmph." I expect some heartaroni-topped heart pizza in the next edition of My Pie Monday.
