Daily Slice gives a quick snapshot each weekday of a different slice or pie that the folks at the Serious Eats empire have enjoyed lately.
Ocean Beach may be San Diego's most laid-back community, but the signature pie at Surfrider Pizza Cafe is anything but mellow. The white pie starts out fairly traditionally, with mozzarella, diced tomatoes, and a basil chiffonade, but things get a lot more interesting with the addition of gorgonzola crumbles and roasted garlic. On this particular slice, there were four whole cloves. The slightly sweet (but still potent) garlic and the sharp, salty gorgonzola give the slice heady and robust flavors, which meant one slice ($3) was more than enough to completely satisfy my craving.
The crust was baked to a golden brown, and studded with tiny blisters on the bottom. It was light and crisp, and sturdy enough to fold in half (which kept the olive oil contained).
Surfrider offers a daily special (2 slices and a soda for $6) but you may want to stick with one slice so you'll have room for a carrot cake cookie for dessert ($1 each).
