Lefty's Chicago Pizzeria is a local institution. Owned and operated by a family of Chicagoans, the pizzeria brings the flavors of the Second City to San Diego, offering three types of pies: thin crust, deep dish, and stuffed. The first two types are available by the slice (two for $6.50, including a can of pop).

Lefty's deep dish pies aren't nearly as deep as typical Chicago-style deep dish pizzas—you won't confuse these pizzas with casseroles. But they still boast a crisp and flaky golden-brown crust, lots of stringy mozzarella, and a straightforward sauce made of sweet tomato chunks.

A major upside of this medium-dish pie is you can eat more than two slices without drifting into a carb coma (and still have room for a couple of beers)...but if a cheese-laden, sauce-covered monster is what you're after, I'd stick with the stuffed pizza, even even though it takes an hour to bake.
