Daily Slice gives a quick snapshot each weekday of a different slice or pie that the folks at the Serious Eats empire have enjoyed lately.
The latest in the Falai family, Bottega Falai, which opened in April, is a small Nolita cafe with a wall of fresh breads behind the counter and a fridge of takeaway sandwiches, salads, and drinks. We walked in with sandwiches on the brain (naturally) and ended up with this mortadella panino, but while paying, it was hard to resist one of these teeny pizza tarts* ($4) sitting on a platter, just asking to be an impulsive buy.
The flaky puff pastry base is brushed with a very thin layer of tomato sauce, and a few roasted cherry tomatoes and cubes of fresh mozzarella sit on top. The saucer-sized tart probably wouldn't do as a whole meal (unless you're a garden gnome, maybe) but it's a pleasant snack when you're not in the mood for a big, cheese-melty, sauce-heavy slice.
* It's technically not a slice, but this column makes room for the occasional, adorable pizza tart.
