Daily Slice: Sopraffina Marketcaffè, Chicago
Daily Slice gives a quick snapshot each weekday of a different slice or pie that the folks at the Serious Eats empire have enjoyed lately.
Office workers in the Loop craving a quick lunchtime pizza fix don't have many options. Chicago doesn't have much of a pizza-by-the-slice culture and while the food truck scene is improving rapidly, they're not bringing pizza. I recently found myself looking for a midday pizza downtown and decided to give Sopraffina Marketcaffè a whirl. The 4-location fast, casual mini-chain is better known for salads and sandwiches, but the menu has five pizzas and there are specialty pies every day.
I opted for the special, which came with prosciutto, crimini mushrooms, pesto marinara, fontina cheese and shaved romano, as well as basil. Like all of the 10-inch pizzas, this one was available as a half or a whole. The pizzas are made in advance and spend a couple of minutes in the oven before being served. The crust was really crunchy and the cheese and prosciutto upped the salt level considerably. The pesto marinara had some nice herbal tomato flavor, but was a bit dried out. Not a particularly enticing pizza, but given the options in the area, it'll do in a pinch.
