Daily Slice gives a quick snapshot each weekday of a different slice or pie that the folks at the Serious Eats empire have enjoyed lately.
It's worth stopping by Arizmendi on the regular for many reasons: freshly baked breads, delicious sweet rolls, and of course: pizza. Every day sees a different pie, topped with farm-to-fork fresh ingredients, and available by the slice or in whole pizzas. Stopping by their Mission location one Saturday afternoon, I was delighted with my slice (and a half) of 'Beet-za' ($2.50), a bread-y, satisfying combination of sweet roasted beets and cheese. Specifically, meaty heirloom beets; funky, pungent Gorgonzola cheese; cooked-down arugula and a sprinkling of parsley.
The sweetness of the almost caramelized beets combined nicely with the salty cheese, and the bitterness of the arugula added a flavor contrast that cut through the richness of the other toppings. The crust, while nicely browned, was definitely more bread-y than not; this slice was more like veggie flatbread than standard pizza. However, with bread and ingredients this good, you won't hear me complaining.
