100+ degree weather in Philadelphia means getting out of the city whenever possible, preferably near water or some sort of nature—in this case the incredible Chanticleer Estate, where we had pizza delivered to a fake-ruins garden that looked like a scene out of Game Of Thrones.
The Philly 'burbs are a vast reserve of uncharted pizza territory, chock full of neighborhood pizzerias that have been around forever—some just OK, others outstanding—but rarely mentioned outside of a 5 mile radius. Vic & Dean's was recommended as one of the best in the Wayne area.
The plain pie was decent, with a slightly sweet sauce and a nice balance of cheese, although the medium-thin crust a bit underdone. The super garlicky white pie was much better, with a perfectly crisp crust, fresh ricotta and tomatoes. With sausage quality becoming my number two pizza litmus test after plain/Margherita, we ordered a third pie topped with chunks of spicy sausage that cut through the sweet sauce, definitely my favorite of the three.
