Walking into Vito's Pizza in Cherry Hill, New Jersey you can just tell that it's a family affair. There are easily three generations working the counter, answering phones, manning the oven, folding boxes, and chatting with the steady influx of customers. Even before scanning the slices, this place had that kind of neighborhood thing going on where you just kind of know that the pizza is going to be solid.
Behind the counter there were all sorts of Philly-Jersey standards like cheesesteak slices and chicken parm slices but it was a Sausage Slice ($2.50) that got me excited. Instead of unrecognizable and unremarkable crumbles of so-called sausage or desiccated jerky-like rounds, this slice was topped with thin, oblong slices of what was very obviously good Italian sausage complete with visible flecks of fennel and black pepper. Underneath all of that awesome sausage was a stand-up Jersey slice with a decently chewy crust, lightly sweet sauce, and just enough cheese to make sure that the sausage had something cushy to melt into.
