Set in an old service station, Diesel Pizza Pub carries the gearhead theme all the way: the waitstaff stashes napkins, straws, and such in rolling mechanic's toolboxes, a spiffy antique gas pump stands at the bar, and big double garage doors are rolled open on seasonable Southern weekends, when live bands rock the patio and the nearby shopping district brings in hipsters for an impressive beer list and pizzas with names like "High Octane," "Hot Rod," and "Turbo Charger."

I strapped in for "The Mack," Diesel's "deluxe" pizza. The thin crust hints at the owners' New York–New Jersey roots, with just a smattering of marinara and mozzarella. Toppings-wise, this model is tricked out with sausage, ham, pepperoni, bacon, green bell peppers, mushrooms, and red onions, then sprinkled with Parmesan.

The edges showed slight blackening from the gas oven, but I could detect no burnt taste. I do wish there had been a touch more cheese to help glue the toppings in place; I spent as much time picking shrapnel off my plate as I did holding the big folded slice. The green peppers were my least favorite element here; I'm just not a GP guy, but the crunch they provided (along with the onions) was a good thing. And while I prefer crumbled sausage to halved slices, this meat was nicely seasoned.

A slice and an Arnold Palmer rang up at $5.50, making Diesel a more than decent place for a pit stop.
