Tomato Class at the Brooklyn Brainery

There's a lot to know about tomatoes. Remember how much Scott Wiener had to say about them just in his post on the San Marzanos alone? There was lots of myth busting going on there, but if you want to hear more from him on the topic of this enigmatic fruit, then you need to get your tomato loving self to the Brooklyn Brainery tonight. Scott will be giving a talk and conducting a tasting in a class that goes from 7:00-8:30pm. Tickets are $15 at the door.

Here's a little teaser from Scott himself on what to expect in tonight's class:

The class will involve a blind tasting of both canned and fresh tomatoes of all possible distinctions. We'll find out firsthand whether or not tomato lovers can tell the difference between average canned plum tomatoes, California canned San Marzanos, NJ fresh picked San Marzanos and DOP San Marzanos. It's going to be a "put your money where your mouth is" kind of thing. We'll also compare NJ-fresh and FL-gassed beefsteaks before discussing the huge differences between the fresh can canned tomato industries. There will be some history and botany in there as well, all for the love of the tomato. I currently have a stack of cans sitting on my kitchen table waiting to be swapped into identical containers and labeled for the tasting. Besides featuring all the tomatoes mentioned in my San Marzano post last week, we'll also be tasting Paulie Gee's secretly sourced tomatoes tonight! He takes the labels off the can and is extremely mysterious about their origin. All that aside, we'll find out if they really taste that good.
