Daily Slice: Blue Moon Pizza, Smyrna, Georgia
Daily Slice gives a quick snapshot each weekday of a different slice or pie that the folks at the Serious Eats empire have enjoyed lately.

"Life should be less ordinary." That's the motto of Atlanta's Blue Moon Pizza, and they take it to heart, with numerous extra touches that make this everyday place a little on the special side. Sexy swirls of sauce on the BBQ chicken pizza. A killer full bar. Peppers in three colors instead of one. An extensive gluten-free menu for 'za fans who need it. Not just three brick-and-mortar locations around town (Marietta, Vinings, Buckhead... Sandy Springs coming soon!), but also a rehabbed 1961 fire truck outfitted with a stone pizza oven to make their pies mobile for festivals and private events.
Blue Moon's slices are nicely-sized, but not New York huge. Cut from a stack of ready-to-go pies, they're loaded (and I mean loaded) with the toppings of your choice and slid into one of the stacked Zesto ovens until just the slightest bit of char starts to appear on the corners. The plain cheese was a decent enough starting point; I found the SMP to be better by far. Mine was a little hard to fold, with those loaded toppings spilling out, but the taste made it worth the extra effort. The sausage was very tightly crumbled and had a spicy kick. And I really enjoyed the healthy sprinkling of what appeared to be thyme across the top. The crust was thin with a good bit of chew to it, all the way to the end.
Two cheese slices and a soda that my server Aubrey never let get more than halfway empty for $4.99 was a good deal. But when I go back, I'll start working my way through some of the add-on toppings like basil cilantro, chorizo, avocado, and (God help me) cayenne-candied bacon. Talk about "less ordinary."
