New and Notable NYC Pizzerias
With National Pizza Month drawing to a close, I'm in a reflective mood. Let's take a look at some of the new in NYC pizzerias that have opened this year. You can find new and notables—including Barboncino, Wild Rise, Zero Otto Nove, and more—in the slideshow above. After the jump, we pour some olive oil out on the curb for our home slices who closed this year.
Noooooo! The location that started it all. Motorino was one of my favorite pizzerias in the city—not to mention the U.S. An unstable building—some wags called it "the leaning tower of pizza"—led to the demise of this Williamsburg joint. Thank the pizza lords that Motorino still has a Manhattan location. (Though I preferred the larger interior of this one.) Word was that owner Mathieu Palombino was going to try to reopen somewhere else in Brooklyn, but I haven't heard any official word yet on where that might be. In the meantime:
Ray's Pizza on Prince
The victim of a classic doomed location and what many described as indifferent service, 900 Degrees was the East Coast outpost of San Francisco pizza man Tony Gemignani's mini empire until it closed in September. It served Neapolitan-style pizza, Roman-style, and tomato pies. And those tomato pies were great. Nothing else like 'em in the city. It's a shame this place came and went so fast.
Totonno's Manhattan Locations
Totonno's owner Lawrence Ciminieri cited a rent increase at the 81st Street shop for the shuttering when both this one and the 26th and Second location closed in April. "You know how it is in New York," he said when we reached him for comment this evening. "You gotta be corporate anymore—you gotta be a Papa John's&mdsah;to afford it."
Pizza 8 at New World Mall, Flushing
With pizza as ai yah–inducing as the "China Town" slice, it's no wonder this take-out stand in the New World Mall food court went under. That, and it was just insanely out of place among all the Asian-food stands there. That's not to say it couldn't have worked, just that you never rode the escalators down there thinking, "You know, with all the other great stuff in here, I really want a slice of mediocre pizza."
