The gang's all here
From left: Aya Kristen Alt (yes, Kenji's her brother), Tupper Cooks! (who takes his name from the town of Tupper Lake), dmcavanagh, Adam Kuban, dhorst. There's also a photo of one of dhorst's pizzas, and the oven we cooked all in.
Here's a larger photo of dhorst's pie. This was one of the prettier pizzas of the night, from near the end of the session, when we had all sort of figured out the best way to use the oven. (Before that, lots of pizzas got burned.)
Our host and the pizza geeks
Kate Martin (left) graciously opened her home (and oven) to us. Tupper (right of Kate), masterminded this whole pizza party. Dmcavanagh (right photo) and one of Kate's friends make some pies.
Dhorst opens the door on a fridge full of ingredients, including two 6-pound blocks of Grande mozzarella cheese and more toppings than the wackiest pizzeria you could imagine. Diana (that's her name) brought some roasted cherry tomatoes and Mike's Hot Honey (bottom left and middle). Dmcavanagh brought a crapload of dough (bottom right).
Aya's brussels sprout pizza
Aya made a nice brussels sprout pie. It's a little oblong, as we had some trouble during the night with the pizza peel. The head of the peel kept falling off the handle, leading to some misshaped pies.
Stretching and saucing
From left: dhorst stretches dough for an end-of-night square pie, Aya sauces a round of dough, dmcavanagh puts the finishing touches on one of his masterworks.
One of the first pies of the night
Dhorst built this pie, and Tupper cooked it. The fire was intense. Maybe too much so. At the beginning of the evening, pies burned before the dough could cook through. This one's salvation was due to the fact it wasn't placed too close to the fire.
Girl Slice's pineapple pizza
Ever the gentleman, dmcavanagh remembered that Girl Slice LOVES pineapple pizza. He made this personal-size beaut just for her. And it's even sort of heart-shaped.
Top: Tupper looks like he's going to knock the crap out of someone with the pizza peel. Diana and dmcavanagh make pies. Bottom: Adam shovels in his Famous Original A (Italian sausage, onion, Mike's Hot Honey).
Dhorst's potato pizza
Certified pizza obsessive Dhorst, who in the past has worked in a pizzeria making pies, was a natural with the oven. She paid careful attention to turning the pizzas, which was difficult, believe me. Because the fire was so hot, you really had to turn quickly and often. Her pizzas were consistently nice.
The kitchen at Kate's place has a large island, which became a giant prep station. Top left: Tupper's friend Ann Marie stretches a round. Top right: Dhorst and Tupper's wife, Nancie, work on some pies. Bottom: Can you guess what dhorst is making? That's right, a Pizzeria Bianco–inspired Rosa, with pistachios, onion, and olive oil.
Dhorst let the dough for this one rise for a couple hours before topping it and baking it in the regular home oven. Half is basically a good ol' American Supreme Pizza—onions, peppers, pepperoni, sausage, etc.
