Letters to Totonno's: Pete Wells, Allison Robicelli, Cookie Cimineri, and Others on America's Church of Pizza
On Monday, we reported the much-anticipated news that Totonno's was finally back in business, nearly five months after Sandy sent flood waters surging through their front doors. In honor of their reopening, we've collected testimonies and love letters to Totonno's from Louise "Cookie" Cimineri, Pete Wells, Dick Zigun, Adam Kuban, and more.
My Pie Monday: Filipino Breakfast Pie, Spicy Summer Squash and Arugula, Stuffed Detoit Pizza, and More!
I hope you're ready for My Pie Monday, because we've got another stomach-rumbling lineup this week!
A joyous My Pie Monday to one and all! We have a jaw-dropping count of twenty-four contributors this week, and I'm not kidding when I say that each and every one of them has been kicking some major pizza butt.
Kick off your week right with some glorious My Pie Monday inspiration. We've got quite the hunger-inducing line-up today, with a whopping 18 pizzas fresh from the oven.
We're sixteen strong this fine My Pie Monday! And a sweet sixteen they are. If you're making pizza this week, send us a shot for next week's slideshow!
And now we are back to our regularly scheduled My Pie Monday! The pizza load is light this week, but there is great quality in the quantity here. And if you're making pizza this week, send us a shot for next week's slideshow!
At last, My Pie Monday! There are some freakin' incredible looking pies this week. There's lots of evidence of Slice'rs helping Slice'rs via past inspiration, advice, and collaboration. Dmcavanagh, Jimmyg, and Norma427 put their heads together on some dough experiments and the results appear here. Adam took some tips from TXCraig1, who also was the source of topping inspiration for Atmast (who, by the way, is soliciting some pizza stone advice.) Imwalkin represents with the Aleppo, which I'm sure fellow addict Dhorst would greet with a big thumbs up. She and newcomer Mitch Birrittella sent in pics of some drool-worthy grilled pies. Scott D's Margherita being pulled from his newly finished wood fired oven is sure to induce some Slice'r envy. And just look at how beautiful JEL's squash blossom pie is. Amusebouche1 makes a eye-catching pie with zucchini and cured meats, and hogletboglet makes a damn good case for how crave-worthy a simple pepperoni pie can be. After all the fried pie talk last week, it's great to see Thezaman's montanara. And last, but not least, livrefreeorpie works a very near and dear regional ingredient onto his pie.
Happy very eclectic My Pie Monday! No two pizzas are alike in this 15 pie roundup. From newcomer AMLewis' Dutch oven cooked pie to the Daily Slice-inspired "Mootzaleppo" by Imwalkin, you Slice'rs are demonstrating some serious diversity and creativity—but no surprise there. Norma and Ev spent some time firing pizzas in Ev's wood fired oven and were met with what looks like great success. Atmast has been saving up some sous vide Corned Beef that she used on her Irish pie, whereas Bierebeer opted to go the barbecue brisket route. There's a Rosa a la Chris Bianco from Burger365, and a hazelnut and date pizza from Redwgn67. Tupper Cooks! finally got to try out cheese curd as a topping, and Tscarborough submits his all-time favorite jalapeño and pepperoni topped pie. There's some mushroom pie advice from TXCraig1 and amusebouche1 revisited the southern inspired tomato pie. There's also a tomato and garlic pie from BHkitchen, a smoky mozzarella and broccoli rabbi by maxcriden, and a whole slew of pizzas from forzapizza.
This My Pie Monday brought Slice'rs out of the woodwork! Not only has Adam Kuban, the creator of all things Slice, joined the folds, but this round also includes Slice heavyweight Pizzablogger, and the return of Ev. Always great to have you guys. And there's been a whole lot of pizza making going on. This week we are seventeen strong! Among the longtime regular MPMers we have jimmyg, amusebouche1, Norma427, Imwalkin, dmacavanagh, and dhorst. Representing the newer regulars are RobynB, Redwgn67, and Steve Viterali. There's always room for more pie makers around here, so we're happy to welcome npinto, brando, and ccleon. Enough with the introductions, let's get to those fantastic looking pies!
Some of you have asked for this Q&A in the comments of older Pizza Obsessives interviews. I've always begged off in the past with some excuse or other. But, guess what? One of my other interviews fell through for this week, and I needed someone quick to fill the slot, so here you go! Is it weird to sit yourself in the hot seat? I guess we're going to find out. —AK
So here's something crazy I have never mentioned on Slice and maybe this counts .... On that Rachael Ray trip, the magazine paid for a crazy-ass plane trip from NYC to PDX to SEA to SFO to LAX to PHX to MCI (that's Kansas City). Instead of going straight home to NYC, though, I decided to have my "return" flight drop me in KC so I could visit my family. The magazine's travel agent was amenable to this. What did she care if my last leg stopped in NYC or KC? As long as I paid my own way back from KC to NYC, that was cool with her. Anyway, here's the deal, though: I didn't go home to NYC.
Well, ladies and gents, I know some of you have been watching for my recap of the pizza-party bridal shower that Girl Slice roped me into catering on Saturday. I'm sorry I didn't post it yesterday. It's taken me this long, you see, 'cause I'm typing without the use of my right-hand index finger.
If you're thinking of making pizza for your sweetheart on this Valentine's Day, you've come to right place. Here's a great gallery of inspiration from your fellow Slice'rs, complete with a spicy taco salad pizza from Tscarborough, a gorgeous breakfast pie from Amusebouche1, and a pizza topped with homemade bratwurst from BiereBeer. (We better see some heart-shaped pepperoni next week.)
I'm kind of surprised there aren't any pizzas topped with towers of buffalo wings this week! Still, we have some fun pizzas for this week's My Pie Monday, including a crazy yellow Margherita from Scott D, a Japanese pizza from hmw0029, and a crust that's made with pecan flour from Norma427. Plus, great contributions from Burger365, Cookhacker, Amusebouche1, Rick C., James S., Dhorst, Adam Kuban, and Gregmcg.
