Please Help: Slice Needs Linguists!

It's not often that we at Slice ask anything of you, our readers. But now's one of those times that we do. We want to know how to say "I love pizza" in multiple languages. Better yet, we want to be able to type it in the alphabet or character set of the native language, i.e., not transliterated. We would be forever grateful if you sent us the following languages: Afrikaans: Ek is lief vir pizza Arabic: Danish: Jeg elsker pizza Dutch: Ik hou van pizza Finnish: Minä rakastan pizzaa French: J'adore le pizza Gaelic: German (mine's rusty): Ich liebe...

A Match Made in Heaven

Hey, pizzafans—some exciting news here at Slice. In a special arrangement with food writer Ed Levine, this site is going to be publishing excerpts from his book Pizza: A Slice of Heaven. Its subtitle, The Ultimate Guide and Companion, pretty much sums up the contents. It's an exhaustive look at this nation's (and Italy's) best pizzerias, with guides and musings on all things pie. The first of these posts will go up shortly, followed over the next several days and weeks by others. To read them all as a bundle as they start to accumulate, visit the Slice of Heaven...

Slice Going to Amsterdam

Late next month, I'll be going to Amsterdam. Full disclosure: The trip is part of a junket for bloggers put together by Holland.com, the web presence of the Netherlands Board of Tourism and Conventions. Holland.com is paying for the flight as well as five nights in a hotel near the city center, and an Amsterdam public-transport pass. In exchange, I've agreed to sit for an interview with the board of tourism that may appear online or in print, place the "Bloggers in Amsterdam" logo in my navigation bar for one year, and provide Holland.com with one month of premium advertising...

Chez Pim Raffle: We Have Some Winnahs!

Time to take care of some Slice business now that the holidays are over and my jury duty is on hold for the day ... Late last year Chez Pim held a raffle to raise money for Kashmiri earthquake victims. Slice donated a couple prizes to the raffle to help spur donations. Pim announced the winners earlier this month. The winners of the Slice prizes are: Janelle Gunther and Melissa Cohen. Janelle, who won the pizza-making kit I offered, is a friend of mine*, so I already know where to send her prize. Melissa, I'll get your contact info from...

The Feds Are On My Case ...

More like the Feds want me on a case. Possibly. By the time this post publishes automagically, I'll be at the Brooklyn Federal Courthouse reporting for jury selection. While I'd normally relish a chance to actively participate in justice American-style, I've got a lot of other things going on, so I kinda hope I don't get picked. Especially if it's an evil-ass months-long case, which, given the fact that this is federal court, who knows. And given that this is the same court that heard the cases USA v. Gotti (PDF) and Louima, et al v. City of New York...

Menu for Hope: Grilled-Pizza Party

Just an update on Chez Pim's Menu for Hope II campaign, which ends at 9 p.m. ET on December 24. Quick backgrounder if you missed our post on this the other week: Five dollars buys you a virtual raffle ticket in a drawing for any number of cool and delicious food prizes. Foodbloggers from around the world are offering these prizes. The $5 you spend goes to help Kashmiri earthquake victims, via UNICEF. This isn't a scam, and the site being used to collect the donations is safe and secure. Simply choose from the "menu" of prizes, throw in your...

A Slice of the Strike

NYC Transit Strike 2005 comes to Slice! I'm about to set off for work. Walking 8.2 miles from Fifth Avenue and Garfield Place in Park Slope to 42nd Street between Fifth and Sixth aves. I'm going to test the notion that there's a pizzeria on every corner in New York City. How? I'll be blogging the walk via cameraphone. Don't worry. You won't see boring-ass pictures of people walking over the Brooklyn Bridge. Instead, I'll be taking a camerapic of each pizzeria I see along the way. Look for photos to appear as they upload automagically via Flickr. Ah the...
