The Feds Are On My Case ...

More like the Feds want me on a case. Possibly. By the time this post publishes automagically, I'll be at the Brooklyn Federal Courthouse reporting for jury selection. While I'd normally relish a chance to actively participate in justice American-style, I've got a lot of other things going on, so I kinda hope I don't get picked. Especially if it's an evil-ass months-long case, which, given the fact that this is federal court, who knows. And given that this is the same court that heard the cases USA v. Gotti (PDF) and Louima, et al v. City of New York...

Slice says Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah to you and yours. We'll be out of the office for the next few days. So posting will be light, if at all. Have a good one!...

Menu for Hope: Grilled-Pizza Party

Just an update on Chez Pim's Menu for Hope II campaign, which ends at 9 p.m. ET on December 24. Quick backgrounder if you missed our post on this the other week: Five dollars buys you a virtual raffle ticket in a drawing for any number of cool and delicious food prizes. Foodbloggers from around the world are offering these prizes. The $5 you spend goes to help Kashmiri earthquake victims, via UNICEF. This isn't a scam, and the site being used to collect the donations is safe and secure. Simply choose from the "menu" of prizes, throw in your...

A Slice of the Strike

NYC Transit Strike 2005 comes to Slice! I'm about to set off for work. Walking 8.2 miles from Fifth Avenue and Garfield Place in Park Slope to 42nd Street between Fifth and Sixth aves. I'm going to test the notion that there's a pizzeria on every corner in New York City. How? I'll be blogging the walk via cameraphone. Don't worry. You won't see boring-ass pictures of people walking over the Brooklyn Bridge. Instead, I'll be taking a camerapic of each pizzeria I see along the way. Look for photos to appear as they upload automagically via Flickr. Ah the...

Vendy Awards Tonight

Quick announcement here: The Vendy Awards are happening tonight. Four street vendors will be competing for the title of best food cart in all of Gotham in this inaugural event. I know, this post isn't pizza-related, but I'll be among the judges, so it's fair game for posting on Slice. The action starts at 7 p.m. at 27 East 4th Street (between Lafayette and the Bowery). Tickets are available here and cost $35....

Hurricane Pizza Relief

The folks at Pizza Marketing Quarterly have set up a website to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. Hurricane Pizza Relief offers a way for pizzeria owners and suppliers to send support to the Big Easy and other areas struck by the 'cane. Sounds weird asking pizzamakers and suppliers to help, huh? We had a little chuckle too, at first. But, according to PMQ's website, several such entities have contacted the magazine and asked how they can help. Some have pledged to send pizza trucks (yes, they do exist), while others are sending frozen dough and cheese. At Slice, we usually...

Slice on NY1

If you live in New York City, subscribe to Time-Warner Cable, and have a high tolerance for hot air, you can tune to NY1 between 6 and 7 p.m. tonight or tomorrow to catch this site's editor & publisher on the air. NY1, for those non–New Yorkers reading this, is like a CNN for the Big Apple. The all–New York-all-the-time channel will air a segment on Google Maps mash-ups in which I appear blabbing about how neat the tool is. Slice, of course, uses the function in our recently released Slice Pizza Map, which plots all the pizzerias that...
