Renovations Finished

Regular readers of Slice will notice that our renovations are complete. There's not much to say about them except that they bring Slice more in line with its sister site, A Hamburger Today. In addition to a bunch of back-end organization of archives and an updated flag, we've added a Tags feature to our entries. You'll find them just below the headline on posts. It's just another way to browse and was inspired by a post I read on the blog Ishbadiddle. Gone are any links to The Pizza Peel. We weren't really paying much attention to it, and activity...

Pizzerias, Pizza Fans Needed for TV Show

Slice has a bulletin board forum dedicated to pizza. It's called The Pizza Peel. I've got mixed feelings about the continued usefulness of this site feature, but every now and then, something pops up on it that catches my eye. Like this message from a TV producer. I thought I'd highlight it here on the main part of the site: I’m looking for passionate pizza chefs for a Discovery Times Channel series called '15 Films About Pizza'. I need a pizza chef that believes the Chicago deep dish is the one and only- and a New Yorker that believes the...

Now It Can Be Told

It's been a bit quiet around Slice lately, hasn't it? We apologize for that. Like a mom who ignores the toddler in favor of the newborn babe, your editor in chief here at Slice has been working behind the scenes for the last month on a new niche foodblog, this one dedicated to hamburgers. It's called A Hamburger Today and is now ready for consumption. What does this mean for Slice? Well, now that the heavy lifting has been done on A Hamburger Today, I plan on updating Slice more frequently than I have been in the past few...

Alert: Coney Trip Canceled

The planned pizza trip to Coney Island tomorrow has been canceled. The weather forecast looks absolutely schrecklich. The rain will close the Cyclone, which means a big part of our trip would be pointless. And while the pizza part would still be a viable option, we really want to ride the Cyclone. (And who wants to traipse through heavy rain and wind to get to Totonno's? Not me.) The Management regrets any inconvenience this cancelation may cause. We'll let you know when the raincheck date is determined. Thanks, and hasta la pizza....

January Tsunami Relief

In early January, this website pledged its January ad revenues toward the tsunami relief efforts. We also decided to donate an amount matching our pizza expenditures for the month. With Seltzerboy out of commission and E-Rock AWOL, Slice's pizza spending reflects only this reporter's consumption. Seltzerboy, however, has pledged a matching pizza-dollar amount toward the stricken nations. Here is a breakdown: 01/07: Tomato & Basil, $15.25 01/10: Arturo's, $17 01/11: DeMarco's, $5 01/11: Di Fara, $2.50 01/12: DeMarco's, $5 01/19: Otto, $11.33 01/30: Totonno's, $9 Jan. Ad Revenue: $24.07 S'Boy Matching: $65.08 Total: $154.23 Astute readers will notice pizzerias in...

Reduced Posting Schedule While In Recovery

Call it the "Brewster's Millions Effect," ladies and gentlemen. In that 1985 Richard Pryor movie, Brewster (played by Mr. Pryor) has to spend $30 million in 30 days in order to inherit $300 million. His benefactor's thinking is that Brewster will be so sick of spending millions by the end of the term that he'll wisely invest the real fortune. Well, after what must have totaled 13 slices over the course of four hours on Saturday at the Best of Long Island Pizza Contest—and even though much of it was delicious—I almost don't want to see or think about pizza...

A Call For Help From The Emerald City

This post on our "Pizza Peel" bulletin boards caught our eye when it went up about a week ago. We understand where "Seattle Pizza Girl" is coming from because we've often dreamed of opening our own pizzeria but wouldn't have a clue how to run it. SPG says: My friend and I are coming to New York from Seattle in a month. We are hoping to find a pizza place that will kindly show us the ropes while we are in town. We will gladly pay for your time. Does anyone know of a pizza place or someone who...
