That's Amore: Hot Times on Bedford Avenue

Because even grease-stained wretches need love, too, Slice wades waist-deep into the plaintive muck of Craigslist's Missed Connections in search of pizza-related longing. Such is the swamp of love that spawns That's Amore. —The Mgmt. [Photograph: Adam Kuban] you said I was beautiful..anna marias pizza - w4m - 22 (bedford ave): "This was on a Thursday night maybe 3 weeks ago, at anna marias on bedford across from the charleston. We sat down at the same time, and both made awkward glances at eachother the whole time. As you got up to leave you came over to me and said... More

Dear Slice: Vertuccio's Pizza on the Park

Clicking in to the Slice inbox, some intel from FoS Rachel W. about Vertuccio's, that new brick-oven place on North 12th Street (facing McCarren Park) in Williamsburg. --The Mgmt. The most striking feature of the place is its oven. It's a huge gargantuan machine in the center of the room. The pizza itself was pretty good. Sauce and cheese were great, but we thought the flavor in the crust left something to be desired.Mine was topped with sopressata, which was damn tasty--better than Motorino's. However, Motorino, as a whole, is still much better. The owner(?) also comped us a slice of... More

My Pizza Oven: Mark Wilkie, Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn

When I put out a call for people to be featured in the My Pizza Oven series, I never thought I'd get a response from someone who lived a mile away from me in Brooklyn. I mean, it's New York City--not that many people have their own yards here, and of those who do, how many are crazy* enough to put in a backyard pizza oven? Nice to see an oven grow here. --The Mgmt. Mark Wilkie's oven--just finished over the weekend. [Photographs: Mark Wilkie] You put a pizza oven in the garden of your Brooklyn home. First question, then:... More

Goin' Mobile: In Which I Finally Get My Ass Out to Pizza Moto at the Brooklyn Flea

Clockwise from top left: Dave Sclarow builds the pies at a hectic pace before passing them to Pizza Moto's stickwoman. The menu lists Margherita and white pies, with the option to top either with pepperoni. My Margherita pie, fresh from the oven; I brought it into nearby Empire–Fulton Ferry Park to wolf it down at the tree-shaded picnic tables there. Thoughts from Di Fara First-Timers

"I just wished that the slice hadn't been quite so oily; I felt as if I had to slurp through a puddle before getting to the true, vibrant flavors." As promised earlier today, here are the quick-and-dirty notes from the Di Fara first-timers I led on our Midwood expedition earlier today. We ordered a plain round pie, a plain square pie, and a special artichoke pie (round). Total damage: $85 big ones!... More

All You Need to Know About Di Fara, 2009

Now that the $5 Di Fara slice has hit the New York Times, I've got friends and strangers emailing and twitting me with questions I feel I've answered a million times here on Slice—albeit over the span of many different blog posts. So, as a public service, here is all the info you need to know about Di Fara gathered in one place—a Di Fara FAQ, if you will. What's So Great About It? This "crowd" is fairly light, as far as Di Fara goes. Do I really have to rehash all this? A pie from Di Fara can... More

Dom DeMarco and the 'Heavy Hand'

You heard it here first, kids, but the New York Times finally filed a story on the Di Fara $5 slice price, so I guess it's officially news now. Best quote of the story: “It’s like they dug up my grandma and she made the pie." But perhaps the most interesting part of the story is the revelation from Dom's daughter Maggie that something has changed in the way he makes the pies....... More

Openings: Sliceria, Sunset Park

sliceriapizzeria.com Marcello Bucca and family have opened Sliceria in Sunset Park. Per Eater, the place is officially open. Per Grub Street New York, it's selling one of those crazy hot dog–topped slices. Oy! Mr. Bucca's cousin serves as the weekday pizzaiolo, while his wife pulled weekend pie-making duties. Says Bucca, "We felt that Sunset Park lacked a modern, cool pizza joint and wanted to bring a new choice to Brooklynites. Also—there aren't that many women making pizza in town." Slices are $1 and 18-inch pies go for $8. You can't beat that. Sliceria 6016 Fifth Avenue, Brooklyn NY 11220... More
