Elegante Pizzeria: A Slice of Bay Ridge

Elegante Pizzeria 6922 Fifth Avenue, Brooklyn NY 11209 (Bay Ridge/Ovington avenues; map); 718-745-9715 Pizza Style: New York Oven Type: Gas Price:Slice $2.25 Bay Ridge has changed a lot since Tony and Phil Varvara bought Elegante Pizzeria in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. That was back in the early 1980s, but Elegante actually dates back to 1960. For the first two decades of the pizzeria's existence Bay Ridge had little demographic turnover and was populated by a mix of Italian and Greek immigrants. These days the strip of Fifth Avenue is increasingly populated by Lebanese/Arab immigrants and their first-generation children. Kebab houses... More

Joe Biden's Secret Service Detail Eats at Grimaldi's

[Photograph: Adam Kuban] From Slice'r Matt comes an email heads-up that Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, visited Brooklyn's River Cafe for a belated Valentine's Day meal. The New York Daily News reports: As the veep and his wife dined, Secret Service agents gobbled down pizzas from the nearby iconic Grimaldi's Pizzeria. They always say that cops (or in this case, law-enforcement/security types) know where to eat.... More

Totonno's: REOPENED!

I am now at Totonno's, and IT IS OPEN. Lawrence Ciminieri is making pies, and his mom, Cookie, is looking rested but is as irrascible as ever. Videographic evidence, after the jump.... More

Totonno's Reopening: Friday? That's What We Hear

[Photograph: Adam Kuban] So, yeah. The Wednesday reopening? Didn't happen. Totonno's owner Lawrence Ciminieri says the weather KO'd him. But the latest bit of news we have to report in the anticipated Totonno's reopening is that the Coney Island pizzeria will be firing up tomorrow (Friday, February 12). All the items are in place, Ciminieri told Ed Levine by phone last night, and, Ciminieri says, someone from the mayor's office is going to be there at the reopening ceremony. As promised before, Ciminieri will be making the pies tomorrow.... More

Totonno's Reopening Wednesday, February 10

[Photograph: Adam Kuban] Our man Ed Levine just got off the phone with Totonno's owner Lawrence Ciminieri, who tells us that Totonno's is reopening next Wednesday, February 10 at noon. Ciminieri says he himself will be making the pies that day. We're confident that this is the real deal this time. Ciminieri says he will have the necessary permits in place, and that the pizzeria will be ready to go on Wednesday.... More

Vinnie's Pizza: Hawaii 5-0 Slice

I'm back in Williamsburg on Tuesday nights once again for league bowling. I'm between games now as I write this, blogging my between-games pizza dinner. Vinnie's Pizza in Williamsburg always has some wacko special each night. Tonight's was the Hawaii 5-0 slice. Ham, pineapple, and fresh (supposedly) oregano. Not great but not horrible. Crust is OK. All crisp, no chew — likely the result of sitting for a while and then getting the reheat. I toyed with the idea of eating the Vinnie's special slice each Tuesday and blabbing about it here, but I don't know if that would... More

Brooklyn: Toby's Public House (a Checkup)

Clockwise from top left: Toby's is usually packed, especially in summer, when this photo was taken. It still weirds me out when a Slice review gets posted at a pizza joint. My God, man, get the black garlic pie! Previously: Toby's (6/30/2008)... More

Roberta's Magherita pizza. [Photograph: Robyn Lee] Williamsburg kichenware haven and all-around cooking-culture headquarters The Brooklyn Kitchen will be hosting a pizza workshop in conjunction with Roberta's that will teach you how to make Roberta's pizza at home — or at least an approximation, since you'd need a wood-fired oven like Roberta's to really go to town. An employee at the Brooklyn Kitchen classroom space said Roberta's partner Chris Parachini will be among the instructors.
