Bertucci's

Photograph from ElvertBarnes on Flickr "Hi, welcome to Bertucci's. My name is Johnny, and I'll be your server today." When I heard that, I knew I had wandered into a different kind of pizza chain. The state of the art Wood Stone brick oven I was staring at across from our table was another giveaway. It's fueled by gas, though there are other Bertucci's locations with wood-burning ovens. The first Bertucci's opened in 1981 in Somerville, Massachusetts. At one point, Bertucci's had even received certification from the VPN. These days its membership has been suspended because as VPN America... More

A Slice of Heaven: Chain Pizza

I wrote earlier today on Serious Eats about chain restaurants, and that prompted Serious Eater leilacohan to mention Bertucci's, a small pizzeria chain I sampled for my book Pizza: A Slice of Heaven. I figured I'd excerpt information from the book's chapter on chain pizza, starting with Bertucci's, for publication on Slice. Is chain pizza as bad as serious food people say it is? I was determined to find out—and determined to give chain pizza a fair shake. So, as part of my research for Pizza: A Slice of Heaven, I resolved to eat only chain pizza for dinner for... More

Pizza Link Roundup

Maybe I wouldn't knock Pizza Hut so much on this site if it imported stuff like this from its supersecret Japanese labs. Pigs in a blanket on a pizza? I don't know if this "PaPa-Challe" pie is genius or sheer folly. Perhaps both. (The video of the Japanese commercial appears after the jump.) Unique couple owns Lucas, Ohio, pizzeria: "The man at the bar was telling the tale. When he asked how long it should take the Mohawk Pizza and Tavern driver to make the delivery, he was told Stretch should be there in about half an hour. But the... More

Tax and Spend

The pizza you'd get from this deal is probably about as appetizing as the check I threw down Uncle Sam's big-ass moneyhole last week, but you've gotta give Papa John's props for the $10.40 reference. [via Tien]... More

Dunkin' Donuts Rolls Out Pizza

When it rains, it pours, eh? On the heels of Subway's crazy venture into the pizza-making world, we get news out of Chicago that Dunkin' Donuts is making pizza. At least with Subway, you can imagine a connection--they deal with bread and cheese every day. But Dunkin'? Here's what Chicagoist's Louis Frascogna: The deep dish-looking pizza has the exact same flavor as the frozen bagel bites we ate as kids, which isn't a bad thing. The crust isn't really crusty, but more like hot bread, and the sauce has that standard fake pizza sauce flavor with assorted bits of basil.... More

Pizza for Pesos Program Extended

Pizza Patron, the Texas-based pizza chain that received death threats when it announced it would take Mexican pesos at its U.S. stores, is extending the program. It was supposed to run through February but will now run through the end of April. Founder Antonio Swad: "We have carved this niche in the pizza industry to compete and serve an underserved market, the Latino customer, not to make any political statement." Texas: Chain Extends Pizza-For-Pesos Program - New York Times... More

'NY Times' to Domino's 'Brooklyn' Pizza: Fuhgeddabouddit

Kim Severson of the New York Times does the best job yet of getting to the bottom of the puzzling Domino's Brooklyn Style Pizza kerfuffle. We're surprised she lived to write the story, after having brought the chain pie into Coney Island's Totonno's for comparison: "Get that thing out of here," was the first thing Totonno's owner, Louise Ciminieri, said when she saw the Domino's box.Once we explained that we were on a mission to determine exactly what constituted a Brooklyn Style pie, she softened. Sort of. "When they say Brooklyn Style Pizza they're referring to us," she said. "We... More
