Pizza Flavored Steamed Buns: Stupid, or Genius?

At a convenience store In Japan, you've got a window full of rice balls in flavors ranging from pickled plum to spicy pollack roe, skewered beef guts or fish cakes simmered in broth, or—a relative newcomer to the snacking scene—Chinese mandou-style buns, commonly called simply man in Japan. The usual suspects are there—pork, cabbage, mushroom—but this time I was interested in the single neon-orange specimen with the intriguing name pizza-man. This, I thought to myself, has the potential to stagger me with its genius.

Daily Slice: The 'China Town' at Pizza 8 in Flushing's New World Mall

The "China Town" slice at Pizza 8 in Flushing's New World Mall food court is topped with Cantonese roasted pork, Taiwanese sausage, fried onion, green pepper, basil, and mozzarella. None of those things on their own are horrible. And in fact, some of them (the cha siu and the Taiwanese sausage) are AWESOME.

My Pie Monday: Mikey K.'s Pizza Mexicana

[Photograph: Mikey K.] This entry would have been perfect for Fusion Pizza Week last week on Slice. Señor Mikey K. says: Hey Adam, attached is a photo of my latest homemade creation, Pizza Mexicana. I'm a lover of two things in this world: Pizza and Mexican food, and this pie was my ultimate fantasy. The dough is my own homemade recipe. I use Pillsbury Bread Flour, salt, fresh yeast that I get from a Polish bakery nearby, and, of course, NYC tap water. I let it rise for an hour at room temperature and then move it to the fridge...

Memphis: Coletta's, Home of BBQ Pizza

Coletta's Italian Restaurant is supposedly the place where barbecue pizza was invented. It was also claims to be the oldest restaurant in Memphis, dating back to 1923, when it introduced pizza to the city in the 1950s, and was Elvis Presley's favorite pizza. I don't doubt any of the claims. Apparently when Coletta's started serving pizza, locals had no idea what it was or how to eat it. Only when they decided to top it with something a bit more familiar did the pizza take off.
