9 NYC Pizzerias with Great Gardens

Let's talk about the weather. Though it's still a bit chilly and rainy here in NYC, the trees at least are blooming, which means truly glorious days are on their way. We at Slice can't think of a better way to mark the season than with a roundup of our favorite NYC pizzerias with garden seating. More

L&B Spumoni Gets Name-Checked in NYT Movie Review of 'Cop Out'

From A. O. Scott's review of Cop Out: In the film's favor, it should be noted that this chase winds through some actual Brooklyn locations, including a sylvan corner of Prospect Park and --twice! -- the L&B Spumoni Gardens, a venerable and beloved al fresco pizzeria in Bensonhurst that serves some of the best Sicilian pie in the borough. But local color and playful good humor will only take you so far, and "Cop Out" does not amount to much more than a blooper reel in search of a movie. The Real World Brooklyn Goes to L&B Spumoni Gardens

An email from a friend asks: "Did you watch the new Brooklyn-based Real World? They went to L&B Spumoni Gardens." My answer is no. The last thing I need in my life is to waste an hour of it watching a group of fame-obsessed, sexually confused post-adolescents work out their cringe-worthy issues on TV. But when one of Brooklyn's favorite pizzerias is involved I can hold my nose and tune in. Unfortunately, the bit at Spumoni Gardens lasts all of 5 seconds, consisting of the cast ordering and eating the square slices the Bensonhurst joint is known for. I've... More

L&B Spumoni Gardens Latest Pizzeria to Raise Prices

Famous for its Sicilian slices, the Bensonhurst mainstay has jacked its rates. From amNY: "L&B gave in on Monday, upping the price for both [its regular and square slices] to $2.25 — just in time for the spring when things start heating up at the popular pizzeria, which is also a hangout for the young and old when it becomes warm thanks to its ample outdoor seating." The Pizza Express

After starting a six-pizzeria pizza crawl at Franny's, travelers board the" Pizza Express." This afternoon I had the pleasure of riding aboard what I'll call the Scott Wiener Pizza Express. Scott Wiener is a true pizza lover, one who keeps a pizza journal that's legendary among those who know him, and his love and enthusiasm for the pie is truly infectious. So much so that a little more than 20 people showed up for a tour that would take us from Prospect Heights to deep Brooklyn, up to East Harlem, and back again to Brooklyn (see map, after the... More

Daily News Pizza Roundup

This is another week-old one that we neglected to post about during our renovation. The Daily News did a roundup of New York City's best pizzerias last week. As we told Eater, the new foodblog from the folks who brought you Curbed: A nice roundup, I think. A lot of it is old hat to me, but there were some nice surprises in there, particularly a couple Brooklyn places (Graziella's, Laura's) that have been lurking one or two neighborhoods over from Slice HQ.Irene Sax knows her stuff, and I agree with most of her assessments, although I don't know why... L & B Spumoni Gardens

... Or, 'You Eat the Nicest Pizza on a Honda'* The Garden of Eatin': L&B Spumoni Gardens, family-owned for more than 60 years (top left), is known for its out-of-this-world Sicilian slices. More a comestible complex than just a single restaurant, L&B boasts a pizzeria (whose pass-through window can be seen at top right), a spumoni stand, and a sit-down Italian eatery—all in a sprawling compound on 86th Street between West 10th and West 11th streets in Brooklyn's Bensonhurst neighborhood. Just as Batman has the Batmobile, Slice has "The Slicecycle" (below right), its front wheel a compass pointing to truly... More

The alt-weekly's Robert Sietsema tallies his top 100 Italian restaurants, DeMarco of Di Fara fame clocking in at lucky thirteen. Robert Sietsema of the Village Voice runs down his top 100 Italian restaurants.
