From an interview with Motorino's Mathieu Palombino on Gothamist: Are you worried about becoming too popular? On Thursday night there was a pretty long wait for Motorino hopefuls. The way we did Motorino in the city is that we have a much smaller appetizer section, a much smaller pizza section. Because I was very well aware that we had too little seats, and Manhattan is a big city. And there were a lot of people interested. Things seemed pretty under control there, and the pizza seemed up to snuff vis-à-vis the original Brooklyn location (that is to say excellent), so there didn't seem to be much to blog about. [Photograph: Paulie Gee] A couple of serious eaters were lucky enough to be invited to dinner at Motorino Manhattan on Saturday, and anybody worried that Mathieu Palombino was not going to be a worthy successor to Anthony Mangieri can rest easy. The pizza was pretty damn good, light and crisp and lightly charred on the outside and tender and cooked though on the inside, even though Palombino said he is still getting acclimated to Mangieri's custom built-in-Italy oven. More than anything else, Palombino's comments told me that he has the necessary obsessive perfectionist gene that Mr. Mangieri has. Serious...New East Village Motorino Opening September 14
According to the New York Times, the East Village Motorino (replacing Una Pizza Napoletana) will open September 14.
