Cry, Baby, Cry

Following up on its coverage of the Cleveland Papa John's "Crybaby" debacle, the food humor blog So Good discovers that the chain's apologetic 23¢ pizza offer only applies to consenting adults. Ironically, the pizza chain is refusing to give out pizza to any actual crying babies. Don't be ageist, Papa John's; children are people, too....

Papa John's Hits Online Ordering Milestone

That's a lotta dough: Papa John's passes $1 billion mark in online sales. Kind of amazing, really, especially considering that PJ's has the worst online ordering system of the big three. That's a seven-year total, and the chain announced the news yesterday. "In 2001, the chain's online sales totaled $20.4 million. Last year, its online sales approached $400 million."...

Papa John's LeBron James 'Crybaby' Shirt Controversy Means Cheap Pizza for Clevelanders

The news: Some Cleveland Cavaliers fans are boycotting Papa John's because of a T-shirt circulated at the Cavs-Washington Wizards game on Friday night. Behind the news: The shirt had the word "crybaby" emblazoned above James's number, 23, and was distributed by a local Papa John's as a way to help fans distract James during Friday's game. "Crybaby" was a reference to James's waterworks and whining over being fouled excessively hard in a previous game. The shirt nonsense didn't get much play until John Eick from the blog So Good posted about it and had Cleveland fans rallying against the...

Papa John's CEO: The Economy Sucks, Pizza Industry in a Funk

With the economy circling the drain, the pizza industry is taking it on the chin, Papa John's CEO Nigel Travis said at the Reuters Food Summit in Chicago today. A perfect storm of recession,* rising commodity costs (cheese and wheat), and steeper gas prices for consumers have hit Papa John's—and I'm guessing other chains—hard. The third largest chain says it won't raise prices, make pizzas smaller, or start using cheaper ingredients but will look at a value menu for cost-conscious pizza-eaters. (Pizza Hut's value-minded Pizza Mia—$5—is reportedly going over like gangbusters.) *In the article Travis says, "I personally think we...

Papa John's Now Taking Texted Pizza Orders

From the Associated Press: "First, Papa John's customers register online to create accounts. They can save up to four favorite orders, along with a delivery address and payment preference. Customers can punch in 'FAV1,' 'FAV2,' 'FAV3,' or 'FAV4,' to text message orders. Papa John's sends a reply with the order, and the customer can confirm or change it." [via "Girl Slice"]...

Papa John's Invades Neighborhood Pizzeria's Turf

In a move that reflects local food and national trends and the de-evolution of the foodscape, Papa John's is opening a store in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, right next door to a beloved local pizzeria, Johnny's: "This is the best pizza in the area," said Roger Ramos, a postal worker who grew up nearby. "Papa John's is just generic. Why are they coming here? Greed? I don't know." "If we get short on cheese or tomatoes, we go to him or he comes to us," said Gino Campese, the owner of Scotti's Pizza. "When it's time to raise prices, we get...
