If I Could Only Eat at One NYC Pizzeria (Other Than Di Fara), What Would It Be?

Hi, Adam,I will finally get to come to NYC in the week just prior to Thanksgiving this year. Really looking forward to it, as it may be the only time I ever get to visit your city. That said, I have earmarked Di Fara for a visit, and I am hoping to visit one other pizzeria during my stay. There are so many good ones.So ... can I get a single recommendation plus one backup recommendation from you?One stop (with Di Fara already out of the running) for pizza anywhere in NYC.Bonus if it is a coal-fired oven—not available in my area...

Coal-Oven Pizzerias in New York City

Adam, Any idea just how many pizza ovens in NYC are heated with coal? Mahalo, E.J.F. Dear E.J.F., I know you've emailed a couple times about this, and my apologies for the delayed response—things have been busy at the Slice–Serious Eats office. Anyway, off the top of my head, here are all the ones I can think of. Readers, if I've forgotten any, do let me know in the comments. Hasta la pizza, Adam...

Daily News Pizza Roundup

This is another week-old one that we neglected to post about during our renovation. The Daily News did a roundup of New York City's best pizzerias last week. As we told Eater, the new foodblog from the folks who brought you Curbed: A nice roundup, I think. A lot of it is old hat to me, but there were some nice surprises in there, particularly a couple Brooklyn places (Graziella's, Laura's) that have been lurking one or two neighborhoods over from Slice HQ.Irene Sax knows her stuff, and I agree with most of her assessments, although I don't know why...

Don't Forget: The Pizza Club Meets Tomorrow

Sac's Place Pizza + Bohemian Beer Garden Membership in the Slice Pizza Club is open to all those who simply show up. Details for Saturday's meet-up As always, look for this guy when you arrive. (He'll be wearing a Slice button on that same windbreaker.) About tomorrow's weather: Gosh-darn "isolated T-storms" are in the effin' forecast. But the Beer Garden will still be open and we'll still be going!...

Slice Pizza Club No. 3: Some Pies Have All The Luck

Some pies get all the breaks. Case in point: Name all the coal-oven pizzerias in New York City ...Your list surely includes Lombardi's, (the East Harlem) Patsy's, John's, Totonno's, and Grimaldi's. But what about Sac's? Yes, Sac's. In Astoria. Never heard of it? We hadn't, either—not until a couple months ago. Which is odd, because a coal-fired oven is the holy grail of pizzadom in this town. So why is it that the legacy pizzerias get all the props while this Queens-based shop, located not more than two blocks off the busy Broadway stop on the N/W, doesn't get any?...
