As we edge closer to 2012, taking stock of the past year and the trends that were help to orient us in the ever-evolving pizza landscape. If there is one thing that I learned in 2011 it is to look to the home kitchens of Slice'rs for what's really taking hold. It isn't always some innovative new way to rework the cheese, sauce, and dough combo, but rather giving new life to tried and true styles and varieties, and in doing so, introducing folks coming from many different pizza backgrounds to pizzas that are totally new to them. Here are some of the trends we've noticed in the past year, and a look at possible trends to come.
This is an annual thing with me now (see 8PTHMD 2009 and 8PTHMD 2010). I ate a lot of pizza over the course of the year, but these eight pies, mostly from around the NYC area, are the ones that haunt my dreams even as we close in on 2012. Like years past, I'm not declaring these "the best," per se, just eight pizzas that stand out in my memory and that I want more of. Are they in any kind of order? Not this year, so don't read anything into it. Just peep the slideshow and salivate.
Daily Slices are a great resource for bookmarking some of the best slices and pies in the great wide world, but they are short and sweet and can quickly be forgotten. Not to worry, we've got your back. Take a look at the most popular Daily Slice posts of 2011 slideshow so you can add these to your pies-to-try-in-2012 list.
Items on this site tend to roll off the page pretty quickly, sometimes disappearing before you've had the chance to check them out. That's fine with goofy pizza-related news items, but our reviews are another thing — I don't want the pizza-obsessed out there (that would be you) to miss any opportunity to try a killer pizzeria. So I've gone back through the Slice archives for 2010 and have indexed all the reviews in one handy post. Hope you discover something new!
At one point more than a year ago, Slice'r famdoc suggested we do a weekly poll. We really started this feature in earnest in 2010, with a pizza-related question for you each Monday (minus a few weeks we missed).
Some polls were great and revealed more than we thought they would (like the charring one, which was like a group therapy session). And some polls ... well ... all I can say that in coming up with a new topic week after week there are bound to be some stupid ones here and there.*
Gathered here are most of this year's polls, with their current standings. Please note that many of these had 3 or more options, so "winning" percentages may not be 51% or higher.
Also note that if you feel strongly about any of these, the polls are always open, so go vote if you want to sway the outcome.

I think this is going to be an annual thing now (see 8PTHMD 2009). I ate a lot of pizza in 2010, but these eight pies from around the country* continue to haunt my dreams. Like last year, I'm not declaring these "the best," per se, just eight pizzas I keep thinking about and wanting more of.

The Year That Was slogs along, with a look back at the cheesy, saucy, crusty trends that shaped pizza in 2008—in roughly chronological order. Pizzeria Bianco Mania Pizzeria Bianco has popped up again and again on Slice, but 2008 seemed to be the year that everyone visited the place but me.
