Reality Check: Red Baron By the Slice Frozen Pizza

The folks from Red Baron parachuted in last week with an assortment of new products that should be appearing in your local freezer section soon. Perhaps the one that interested me the most was their By the Slice microwaveable pizza. I mean, look at the box. It says "By the SLICE" on it, with the emphasis on SLICE, as if they were trying to get my attention. It's billed as "the first microwaveable slice of pizza that provides unbelievable pizza taste from the microwave." "Unbelievable," huh? That sounds like a challenge, so I figured I'd put the stuff through its paces in a Reality Check.

DiGiorno Cheese & Tomato 200 Calorie Portions

[Photograph: Adam Kuban] Sure, Girl Slice would like me to lose weight, but the box you see above is not part of that scheme. Rather, a package showed up at Slice/Serious Eats HQ a little while ago. I popped it open and found a foam cooler with DiGiorno's new 200 Calorie Portions inside. Hmm. OK. I'm game, I figured. I'm no snob when it comes to frozen pizza. I'll try it all, and I like most of it. I wondered if these things could replace my beloved Totino's. So, how is the new DiGiorno 200 Calorie Portion frozen pizza?...

Freschetta Frozen Pizzas Shrinking?

Nobody's Business According to photojournalist and freelance writer Rogier van Bakel, Freschetta has downsized its frozen pizzas from 11 inches to nine inches. If I know my pie pi, that means the pizza's surface area has gone from 95 square inches to just under 64 square inches. That's a third less. And at least at our grocery store, the retail price of the damn thing has actually gone up. Given the fact that this is Freschetta we're talking about, the shrinkage might be a good thing....
