I <3 Pizza

pizza for chris (by a. graham)

Once again, I'm trotting out the heart-shaped pizza (above) my friend Andy made for his wife. Poking around on Flickr, I found about 140 pics of cardiopies. Who knew!? After the jump, a few of my favorites.

Dear Slice: Christmas Pizza at Santacon

20071210-santacon01.jpg

20071210-santacon02.jpgDear Slice, Letters From Our Readers

This was rather early in the day; I have more pizza and Santa pix when the streets were thronged with (3,000!) Santas. However, I was shooting film today; the other rolls won't go in for a day or two. Deck the halls with mozzarella!

Cheers,
Barbara

Dear Barbara,
If you get those rolls processed and have some more good Santacon pix on it, feel free to send them in! This is great. Viva la Santacon!

Hasta la pizza,
Adam

Domino's Introduces Thanksgiving Feast Pizza

20071121thanksgivingpizza.jpg

Heh. Had you there for a minute, eh? Because, given the Oreo Dessert Pizza, the Crispy Melt, and all that, this Thanksgiving Feast Pizza mocked up by The Onion is not entirely implausible.

Thanks, Homeslices. It's Been Real

20071031slicedude-red-64x64.pngWell, it was fun while it lasted, but I guess I'll have to turn this blog back over to Adam now that I'm back to my old self. Sorry if I pissed anyone off. I was just joshin' y'all.

Pizza out, yo.

Cat-Shaped Pizza

20071031halloweenslicedude-64x64.pngOK. OK. Adam thinks I have been scaring you all too much, so he suggested I show you this pizza. It's in a similar ... vein (bwahahaha!) as the Yoda or Darth Vader pizzas but this pizza was made from a recipe in a book called Pizza Fun. It's just another way to costume your pizza, but again, it's not as cool as my vampire-pumpkin get-up!

Scary Pizza: 'Fear Factor' Slice With Worms and Fish Eyes

20071031halloweenslicedude-64x64.pngHope you got yr barf bag ready, peeps, cuz I got the NASTIEST slice of pizza you could ever hope to run away from.

It's a slice of pizza from a long-ago episode of Fear Factor and features a bile-based crust, cow-blood sauce, stinky cheese, and is topped with fish eyes and live worms. Yeeeech!

20071031fearfactor.jpgHere is what Fear Factor contestant Shelby Smith had to say about eating it:

Between all the coagulated blood and the cheese and the worms, I don't think I could even, at the time, differentiate what was in my mouth. I didn't even feel the crunching. I was chewing so quickly and trying just to get through it. There was so much stuff put together. Once it got inside my mouth and I was just chewing everything up, it really didn't even matter at that point.

Gummy Pizza

20071031halloweenslicedude-64x64.pngThis is the only pizza-themed candy that I've run across in my brief life. It does not taste like pizza. It tastes like ... ass. Well, what did you expect? I taste so much better. But you suckers out there can't even bite me.

Scary Pizza, for Chicagoans

20071031halloweenslicedude-64x64.pngYou thought you were going to get off easy, Chicago? No way, man. We all know you hate the thin, crisp slices that typify the New York school of pizza. So I'm subjecting your Windy City eyes to your own version of hell:

Boo! More Scary Pizza for New Yorkers

20071031halloweenslicedude-64x64.pngI'm going to put another scare into New Yorkers. This time, I'm taking you through a horror show of Chicago deep-dish pizza.... More than Hawaiian-style, what Gothamites revile the most is deep dish. I'm gonna stuff your face in it, suckas.

Buckle in, cats. It's gonna be a wild ride. Bwahahaha!

Scary Pizza: Boo! Quake in Fear and Revulsion, New Yorkers!

20071031halloweenslicedude-64x64.pngNow I will try something new. I am going to target my frightening posts at specific markets! This one is for New Yorkers who seem to universally revile the HAWAIIAN PIZZA! Bwahahahaha!

Like a Star Wars Costume for Your Pizza

"The Force is an energy field, created by all living things, that surrounds us, penetrates us, and binds the galaxy together."

20071031halloweenslicedude-64x64.pngUp above me is what Obi Wan said, and that's what pizza is—minus the part about being created by "all living things." (Only a small percentage of all living things create pizza, when you really stop to think about it.) But the rest of the quote holds true.

Whatevs. I just think these Star Wars-ified pies rock. Looks easy enough to dress up your pizza, eh? Still, these pizzas are not as good as my pumpkin-vampire costume, which rocks harder.

Scary Pizza: Boo! This Topping Is Worse Than Pineapple

20071031halloweenslicedude-64x64.pngRemember I said I would scare the living s&*! out of you? Here goes....

You may have seen this around the web last week. McDonald's food as pizza toppings. [shudders] For some reason, Adam didn't get around to blogging about it....

Oh. He just managed to slip out of his gag (I have him tied to a chair in the corner of the room while I hijack Slice), and he says that the images below made him sick to look at. They kinda make me sick, too. See, you've gotta remember that I'm a slice of pizza, so this kind of molestation cuts closer to the bone for me than it does for you. Here's more gruesome detail if you want it.

Slice Dude sez: "The human who created and ate this deserves the coronary he's going to get from it."

HAPPY HALLOWEEN, BOYS UND GHOULS!

Halloween Slice DudeGood morning, boys and ghouls, and HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

I don't know if we've ever formally met, but I believe you have seen me milling about this weblog here and there. Adam is too lazy to give me a name, so I go by "Slice Dude."

Today I am taking over this blog. I will appear throughout the day to SCARE THE LIVING S&*! OUT OF YOU. Or, perhaps, to simply amuse you.

Grilled Pizza

20070831grillin.jpgThis entry originally ran on Slice on August 09, 2004, and has inevitably resurfaced twice a year—just before Memorial Day weekend and, as now, just prior to Labor Day Weekend. With each passing "reheat," it looks more and more dog-earred. I'm not sure whether this post is exhausted or just endearingly dated. Take your pick.

I guess your takeaway from it should be, Hey! I can grill pizza! While that's not so novel a concept in 2007, it seemed to be in 2004, when I first read about it and threw some dough over hot coals for myself (right).

It's not like the idea was new even then (here's a 2002 article on the stuff from New York magazine), but since 2004, I've seen a steady rise in articles about grilled pizza in grub magazines and newspaper food sections each summer. I still think it's a novelty for most people, but I get more and more emails each year asking about the process. And so I hope this post encourages you to try it for yourself.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Posting will resume on Tuesday, January 2!

Yes, the Menorah Is Kosher

sliceholidays_07.jpg

A friend of ours expressed concern that our Hanukkah menorah in the banner above (which will run through December 26) was not kosher.

I thought about that before creating the graphic, but removing the circles was just not an option—I can't have an eyeless smiley Slice dude. Ya know?

My solution for the menorah was to use pixels made from a soy-based imitation meat product. If that doesn't do it for you, pretend they're latkes.

The Christmas tree remains pepperoni-topped.

A Slice of Christmas

Welcome back from the long weekend. I trust that those of you who celebrate Christmas have chosen, chopped, and lugged home your trees or have dragged the artificial Tannenbaum up from the basement.

No? Well, get a move on, folks. Where else are you going to hang these awesome pizza ornaments? The one at left is from bronners.com ($7.99, plus S&H), and the one at right is available from Urban Outfitters ($10, in stores or from website).

Halloween Is Big Pizza Night

20061031SliceHalloween.gifWho knew? Depending on where you live, Halloween is either the biggest or second-biggest pizza night of the year:

Halloween trails just behind Super Bowl Sunday as the busiest day of the year for many pizzerias — and it is often the single busiest day for those located in neighborhoods that are not big on football.

"Halloween breaks our records every year, particularly when it's on a weekend," said Byron Gougoumis, one of four brothers who own Pizza Rustica, with two branches in Oakland. "It's our busiest night of the year. Home delivery is insane. It's got to be the parties and the trick-or-treating."

Makes sense. Parents busy prepping their kids for an evening of candy crusading don't necessarily want to—or have time to—cook.

Happy Halloween, Boys and Ghouls!

As if the Domino's Brooklyn Style Pizza wasn't scary enough, here are some more spooky slices. OK. They're not really spooky at all. But look! Costumes for you (above), and costumes for your pizza (below)!

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!

20060317Gaelic.gifDo the Irish have anything to do with pizza? I don't think so. But I figured today would be a good opportunity to teach you some Gaelic. The little Slice dude to the right there is saying "I love pizza!" According to Slice reader J. John, who sent us the translation (thanks!), it's pronounced is ma lum pizza. Whether this is Irish Gaelic or Scottish Gaelic, I don't know. (If it's the latter, expect us to be rollin' this graphic out on Robbie Burns Day.)

The luck o' the Irish to you all!

Lenny's

The following cluster of photos will no doubt be bewildering. But bear with me. Today's theme is "lights." And lots of them. It's a theme that strings together the over-the-top Christmas decorations of Dyker Heights and the below-the-ankle action of Saturday Night Fever.

That, and the fact that both spectacles take place in roughly the same area of Brooklyn. After that, the association kinda falls apart.

Go Atone

20051012Shofar.jpgIt's just about an hour before sundown as I type this, so our Jewish readers and friends will be starting their Yom Kippur activities. And inactivities—no pizza for you on this Day of Atonement.

I will be joining all you observant Chosen Folks in spirit—at least for the next few hours—thanks to a mouth-numbing dental procedure that was just inflicted upon me. And I'll be reflecting on things that Slice, as a blog, should atone for.

OK. I'm not trying to make light of the holiday, so have a fulfilling sabbath, and I'll catch you on the flipside.

Dreck The Halls

The Bristol Post (of England, not Connecticut) must have had a slow news day Saturday. Want to know one writer's suggestion for a simpler Xmas feast? You guessed it:

Instead of all the hassle, why don't you have yourself a merry Christmas, and bring smiles of joy to your family in the bargain, with our unique "Christmas Pizza". The pizza will sustain and nourish you from dawn to dusk, and it incorporates all the traditional seasonal favourites in one circular platter of delights. ... Once you have made or bought your base, follow our step-by-step guide and in no time you'll be shouting "Pizza On Earth, and Goodwill To All Women!"

1) Christmas morning, and as the house rings to the sound of excited children tearing through wrapping paper you're in the kitchen, nursing a hangover and getting ready to prepare something to eat for breakfast. A classy start to the day is required, so quarter off a section of your pizza using: a) strips of smoked salmon, then fill this section with b) more smoked salmon c) mixed roasted and salted nuts d) strong headache tablets, to help you get over last night's Christmas Heave e) lovely segments of clementines, packed full of important Vitamin C

LEAVE THOSE TURKEYS ALONE! (OR NOT)

EAT PIZZA!We'll be taking a holiday hiatus while I'm in Milwaukee. And while Slice editorial policy dictates that I suggest pizza for your holiday meal, tradition calls and binds me to consume the succulent flesh of Meleagris gallopavo.

Whatever you're eating this holiday, may you savor your meal among friends and loved ones. And remember, pizza is the perfect break from all those leftovers you'll surely have after tomorrow.

If I happen upon any good pizza in the Cream City, I'll be sure to blog it. Bon appétit!

Monster Pizza

This, from the Contra Costa Times:

If you are horrified by the amount of candy passed out to kids during Halloween, consider making some not-so-sweet treats this year. ... Monster Pizza: Spread a toasted English muffin with pizza sauce. Cut out sliced cheese with Halloween cookie cutter and melt slightly on top.

Hmm. Sounds like a recipe for getting your house TP'ed or egged.
