A Slice of Christmas

Welcome back from the long weekend. I trust that those of you who celebrate Christmas have chosen, chopped, and lugged home your trees or have dragged the artificial Tannenbaum up from the basement. No? Well, get a move on, folks. Where else are you going to hang these awesome pizza ornaments? The one at left is from bronners.com ($7.99, plus S&H), and the one at right is available from Urban Outfitters ($10, in stores or from website). Halloween Is Big Pizza Night

Who knew? Depending on where you live, Halloween is either the biggest or second-biggest pizza night of the year: Halloween trails just behind Super Bowl Sunday as the busiest day of the year for many pizzerias — and it is often the single busiest day for those located in neighborhoods that are not big on football. "Halloween breaks our records every year, particularly when it's on a weekend," said Byron Gougoumis, one of four brothers who own Pizza Rustica, with two branches in Oakland. "It's our busiest night of the year. Home delivery is insane. It's got to be the... More

Happy Halloween, Boys and Ghouls!

As if the Domino's Brooklyn Style Pizza wasn't scary enough, here are some more spooky slices. OK. They're not really spooky at all. But look! Costumes for you (above), and costumes for your pizza (below)! Tricky, tricky! Happy Saint Patrick's Day!

Do the Irish have anything to do with pizza? I don't think so. But I figured today would be a good opportunity to teach you some Gaelic. The little Slice dude to the right there is saying "I love pizza!" According to Slice reader J. John, who sent us the translation (thanks!), it's pronounced is ma lum pizza. Whether this is Irish Gaelic or Scottish Gaelic, I don't know. (If it's the latter, expect us to be rollin' this graphic out on Robbie Burns Day.) The luck o' the Irish to you all!... More

Lenny's

The following cluster of photos will no doubt be bewildering. But bear with me. Today's theme is "lights." And lots of them. It's a theme that strings together the over-the-top Christmas decorations of Dyker Heights and the below-the-ankle action of Saturday Night Fever. That, and the fact that both spectacles take place in roughly the same area of Brooklyn. After that, the association kinda falls apart.... More

Go Atone

It's just about an hour before sundown as I type this, so our Jewish readers and friends will be starting their Yom Kippur activities. And inactivities—no pizza for you on this Day of Atonement. I will be joining all you observant Chosen Folks in spirit—at least for the next few hours—thanks to a mouth-numbing dental procedure that was just inflicted upon me. And I'll be reflecting on things that Slice, as a blog, should atone for. OK. I'm not trying to make light of the holiday, so have a fulfilling sabbath, and I'll catch you on the flipside.... More

LEAVE THOSE TURKEYS ALONE! (OR NOT)

We'll be taking a holiday hiatus while I'm in Milwaukee. And while Slice editorial policy dictates that I suggest pizza for your holiday meal, tradition calls and binds me to consume the succulent flesh of Meleagris gallopavo. Whatever you're eating this holiday, may you savor your meal among friends and loved ones. And remember, pizza is the perfect break from all those leftovers you'll surely have after tomorrow. If I happen upon any good pizza in the Cream City, I'll be sure to blog it. Bon appétit!... More

Monster Pizza

This, from the Contra Costa Times: If you are horrified by the amount of candy passed out to kids during Halloween, consider making some not-so-sweet treats this year. ... Monster Pizza: Spread a toasted English muffin with pizza sauce. Cut out sliced cheese with Halloween cookie cutter and melt slightly on top. Hmm. Sounds like a recipe for getting your house TP'ed or egged.... More
