Tony Muia, of A Slice of Brooklyn pizza tours, is starring in a new show on The Travel Channel that premieres tonight at 10pm. The show will follow Tony and his "consiglieri" (pictured above) as they highlight the food and history of their neighborhood and defend their turf against the threat of larger tour companies. More

Pizza Obsessives: Brooklyn Pizza Tour Guide Tony Muia

Pizza Obsessives Adam Kuban 22 comments

I first met Tony Muia a little more than five years ago, when he was just launching his Slice of Brooklyn pizza tour. More than a just a tour of pizzerias, Muia really gives context to the great pizza of the Borough of Kings, sharing neighborhood histories and showing you iconic movie locations. It's a fun tour—and it doesn't taste so bad, either. Anyway, enough gabbing. Let's get Tony in the hot seat. More

therealchiffonade tipped me off to this Today show segment that aired late last week. I neglected to blog it ... until now. Thanks for the tip, Chiffy! And, yeah, I've been on Tony Muia's pizza tour. He's a great guy and the tour is a lot of fun.... More

ABC7's segment on Tony Muia's "Christmas and Cannoli" pizza tour. Tony Muia, who runs the Slice of Brooklyn Pizza Tour, will be on the Travel Channel tonight at 9 p.m. ET as part of a "Christmas in New York" special. While it doesn't sound like he'll be talkin' pizza, he will be escorting the host to Dyker Heights to see its locally famous over-the-top Christmas-light display as part of his Christmas and Cannoli Tour. It'll be followed by dinner at Tomasso's Ristorante for the traditional Christmas Eve Feast of the Seven Fishes. If you live in New York City,... More

A Slice of Brooklyn: The Original New York Pizza Tour

Adam Kuban 3 comments

New York Post I've had a lot on Slice lately about Scott's Pizza Tours, but you know, there's another pizza tour out there, one that's been around for a bit longer and that takes folks through perhaps the best pizza borough* in the city. And that tour, my friends, is Tony Muia's A Slice of Brooklyn Pizza Tour. Muia started his tour in 2005 and has been taking pizza-hungry folks around Kings County ever since, mixing stops at Grimaldi's and L & B Spumoni Gardens with spin around neighborhoods such as Bay Ridge and Bensonhurst. It's thanks to Muia... More

Maiden Voyage for Fledgling New York Pizza Tour

Photograph from DrBaloney on Flickr My buddy Scott Wiener launched his pizza tour venture yesterday with a trip to Lombardi's, Louie & Ernie's, and Patricia's. From the New York Daily News: Pizza lovers with $55 to spare can tool around in a school bus on the first citywide pizza tour, which will hit premier pizzerias on a rotating basis.Wiener is hoping to feature up-and-coming joints — like Luzzo's in the East Village, yesterday's second stop — as well as established favorites."They may not have the track record of Lombardi's or John's, but their pizza is still on the same... Scott's New York Pizza Tours Launches

Adam Kuban 5 comments

Remember that new New York City pizza tour service I told you about early last month? The one that my buddy Scott Wiener is putting together? At that point the tour was but a twinkle of olive oil in Scott's eye. Now his New York pizza tour site has launched and is selling tix. Bus trips are $55, start in Manhattan and go to at least one outer borough and back in four and a half hours. Walking tours are by request only and hit places in downtown Manhattan only. The first trip is April 27; subsequent tours are on... More

New NYC Pizza Tour Service Starting

Adam Kuban Post a comment

Speaking of pizza tours (previous post), the guy behind the tour that landed outrageously on Franny's has turned what was originally an annual birthday event into a fledgling business: Scott's Pizza Tours. The tours aren't up and running yet, but you can sign up for Scott Wiener's cheesy trips at his website, which mentions a spring launch date. Related: A Slice of Brooklyn Pizza Tour visits Brooklyn favorites Grimaldi's and L&B Spumoni Gardens.... More

The 'Gatekeepers' at Franny's

Adam Kuban 2 comments

Eater.com The restaurant blog Eater has a great series called "The Gatekeepers," in which they interview the host or hosts at a given venue. Today they talk to Sarah Gaskins and Nekisia Davis of Franny's: What's the most outrageous request from a customer you've had to accommodate? SG: We once sat 25 people who were on a New York pizza tour. They showed up in a school bus with a mega-phone. After ordering eight pizzas and taking over the whole restaurant, they moved on to the next stop. Hmm ... I wonder what pizza tour they're talking about?... More

Remember Menu for Hope 4 from all the way back in early to mid December? It's the annual charity raffle organized by Pim Techamuanvivit (Chez Pim). Yeah. That one. Well, I've got good news, good news, and bad news. Good news: The raffle raised a whopping $91,188 for the U.N. World Food Program. So thanks to everyone who bought a ticket to win Slice's Guided Pizza Tour for 4. Good news: We have a winner! CHARLES DAVIS, you and 3 of your cohorts are in for a pizza-trippin', face-gorgin', crusty, cheesy, saucy experience. Get in touch, yo. Here's a taste... More

A Saturday Pizza Tour

From left: A Di Fara half-plain, half-artichoke pie; pizza-makers at Franny's; an Isabella's Oven Margherita D.O.C.; Una Pizza Napoletana's marinara pie. Last year around this time Slice/Serious Eats contributed to Pim Techamuanvivit's Menu for Hope charity raffle. Our giveaway was a guided pizza tour for four. Well, the winners—Anthony Kinik and Michelle Marek of Montreal food blog An Endless Banquet—finally made us make good on our prize. (It took them almost a year because they live in Montreal and I secretly think they were waiting for the loonie to beat the dollar before making a trip to the U.S.)... More
