Reaching in to the Slice mailbag, we've got ...
I checked out Maria's Pizza last weekend in Milwaukee. It's insane! I was in town for the afternoon, so I went right when it opened at 4 p.m. Good thing I did. There was a line waiting outside for it to open, and within seconds of the door opening, the entire place was filled. People arriving at five minutes after were told there would be an hour wait! This is like a New York–pizza level of obsession.
Abby and I waited patiently for our server to take our order, which we quickly realized wasn't the protocol. Most people just yelled their order across the room. Though we were probably fifth in line, we gave our order last. The pizza took 45 minutes to arrive, and for some ridiculous reason we ordered a large special.
(Side note: Their menu is one of the most hilariously completed set of descriptions I've ever seen. There is the Special, Special with Pepperoni, Supreme, Supreme with Pepperoni—all with definitions at the bottom of the page.)
The pizza draped off the sides of the tray it's served on, and I think we managed to maybe eat a quarter of it. It's a fine example of the party-cut pizza, and the sausage was incredible. It's certainly not the best pizza I've ever had, but it's certainly one of the best pizza experiences I've had in a while. You can tell that everyone in there really loves the pizza. Thanks for sticking up for the place. It deserves attention.
