Daily Slice gives a quick snapshot each weekday of a different slice or pie that the folks at the Serious Eats empire have enjoyed lately.
Almost every pizzeria in South Philly offers a breakfast pizza. At first, I assumed that these pies would be regular pizzas with eggs and maybe bacon or sausage thrown on top. So one hungover Sunday morning I ordered a small plain breakfast pizza ($4.95) at J&J South Philly Pizza.
Almost a cross between quiche and grilled cheese, the South Philly breakfast pizza is really just scrambled eggs and oozing American cheese on a sauceless pan pizza crust. It's rather beautiful in its simplicity.
At other spots around town, this sort of pie gets loaded up with potatoes and bacon. (Or delicious spinach and tomatoes like the slice I recently enjoyed at Uncle Oogie's.) But there's nothing wrong with starting your day off with something understated.
