Daily Slice gives a quick snapshot each weekday of a different slice or pie that the folks at the Serious Eats empire have enjoyed lately.
When I jumped on Twitter and Facebook the other day to get some recs for places to review, a lot of folks hollered back with great suggestions. Of the several intriguing options, I was most interested in Amore Pizzeria in Flushing ("That shit is the realest," @JeffreyTastes said). Amore the continuation of the now-defunct Gloria's, a well-regarded pizzeria that many folks have lauded as serving some of the best pizza in Queens (if not the best).
As Jeff notes in his excellent Real Pizza of New York iPhone app, "Out of the oven, the cheese and sauce is like soup on a slice... And the slices are always hot out of the oven."
That certainly was the case when I visited. Even at 3:30 p.m., a steady stream of customers ordered slice after slice of ultra-thin, crisp pizza. The sauce, applied in ample amounts along with a hefty amount of cheese to balance it out, is a tiny bit sweet and spiked with a pleasant mixture of herbs.
It's a bit too heavy on sauce and cheese — you can see the toppage extends almost all the way to the edge — but the crust stood up well to all of it.
I'm not sure I'd say this is a destination slice, but located as it is right off Exit 14 on the Van Wyck, it's worth a stop if you're passing through. If you live in the area, you're probably familiar with Amore already. If not, make it your mealtime stop the next time you're shopping at the PathMark, in whose parking lot the place is situated.
