Daily Slice gives a quick snapshot each weekday of a different slice or pie that the folks at the Serious Eats empire have enjoyed lately.

Zelo's cornmeal-enriched pan-baked crust may alarm purists, but Zelo is a rare case of 'interpretive' pizza done right. Repeatedly named one of LA's 99 essential restaurants, the critics and crowds adore the 'deep dish' Corn Pizza topped with fresh corn, balsamic marinated roasted red onions, mozzarella, smoked mozzarella, and chives.


On its own, the cornmeal crust is dry and crumbly. But this shortbread-like base supports oodles of moist cheese and toppings. On the Corn Pizza, a deluge of mozzarella oozes over the crust's edge, bejeweled with sweet corn kernels. With each bite, juicy kernels pop with the addictive satisfaction of bubble wrap. Balsamic glazed onions provide a give-and-take of sweet vegetables and pungent vinegar.

Though the $3.75 slice may look small, this dense pizza will satisfy the most ravenous appetites. I've never seen anyone successfully eat more then two. Zelo offers seven standard pizzas along with three daily specials.
