Daily Slice gives a quick snapshot each weekday of a different slice or pie that the folks at the Serious Eats empire have enjoyed lately.
Nizario's Pizza isn't bar pizza, but it is pizza near lots of Inner Richmond bars and is good for a cheap slice. This place has really thick, bread-y pizza dough; an ideal post-drinking slice. The chewiness of the crust overshadows the flavor, but as a hangover preventer it has its advantages. For one, the extra chewing time means more time to sober up, and extra carbs are a key alcohol buffer.
For a slice with ample grease and mass, there is no better than the pesto slice with pepperoni and olives. The cheese is stringy, as it should be. And the sweetness in the crust is cut by the salty tang of olives and pepperoni. Unlike other pesto pies, at Nizario's the pesto comes in addition to the red sauce.
Nizario's isn't perfect pizza, but it's a good call when you need more than just good taste for your drunk slice at 2:15 am. And as a hangover stopper, it's probably 75% effective.
