As a general rule, any neighborhood that supports a healthy nightlife seems to support a healthy pizzalife. San Francisco's Castro district is no different—four different slice shops sit within a block of the neighborhood's nexus at Eighteenth Street. Among these, Marcello's Pizza stands out for reputation, as I've had quite a few folks tell me they count it as their favorite slice in the city.
Though my Marcello's plain slice ($3) arrived crisp on the exterior and tender within (even after a reheat), the slightly sweet crust struck a somewhat one-dimensional note. The tomato sauce had a nice tang to it, but the relatively flavorless cheese on top desperately needed more salt. Which is to say, I found my slice serviceable, but I wasn't really feeling the best-of talk.
Marcello's offers a long list of toppings, so you can customize your slice with anything from pepperoni to lemon pepper chicken, or even add buttermilk sauce(!?). That's nice, because we all have different cravings when we make our transition from the bar to the pizzeria.
